I'm currently in communication with a company about a legitimate job. The issue is that they want me to come in and take a "skills test", and interview only if I pass the skills test. So it could be the case that the skills test is something bogus and I take a day off and drive 3.5 hrs only to turn around and drive another 3.5 hrs back.

Worth it or not?
Would you move there if you got the job? If you are serious about the job I would take the skills test. Almost every company today has some sort of screening process, especially with the # of applicants. They don't have time to interview every candidate. A skills test is often a way to screen out people that say they are experts in excel or access when they have very limited to no experience beyond making a basic spreadsheet.
What if you were employed but on a contract that ends in June?
Also, I have to travel that distance for any job interview. I live in the middle of nowhere. So part of my apprehension is that maybe I should "save" my gas money and days off for opportunities where an interview is guaranteed, rather than an interview contingent on a mysterious skills test.

I'd move in June. Anyone in the middle of nowhere needs to anyway.
But an interview contingent on a skills test is an unreasonable demand.
