There's a good chance of 30°C in Alberta in the next couple of days.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER DISCUSSION ISSUED BY THE PRAIRIE AND ARCTIC STORM
PREDICTION CENTRE OF ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 7:00 AM CDT MONDAY MAY
14 2018.

ALERTS IN EFFECT...NONE.

SYNOPTIC OVERVIEW...ALOFT THIS MORNING THE POLAR VORTEX IS ROTATING
SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH HUDSON BAY WITH A TROUGH EASTWARD THROUGH
HUDSON STRAIT. AN UPPER RIDGE CONTINUES TO BUILD OVER BC AND THE
YUKON WITH STRONG NORTHWESTERLY FLOW ACROSS THE PRAIRIES AND
MACKENZIE IN BETWEEN.

AT THE SURFACE, A SERIES OF WEAK LOWS ARE ALL THAT REMAINS AROUND
BAFFIN ISLAND OF THE LARGER SYSTEM FROM YESTERDAY. THREE LOWS OF
ABOUT 995 MB LIE OVER FOXE BASIN, THE ENTRANCE TO CUMBERLAND SOUND,
AND IN DAVIS STRAIT NORTHEAST OF CLYDE RIVER. ALL WILL DECAY TODAY. A
LARGE RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE EXTENDS FROM THE ARCTIC SEA SOUTH
INTO THE PRAIRIES, WHERE THE ARCTIC FRONT HAS STALLED OVER CENTRAL
MB RUNNING BACK TOWARDS NORTHERN ALBERTA. OUT WEST, A 999 MB
STACKED LOW IS MOVING ONSHORE INTO THE SOUTHERN YUKON AND WILL AID
IN DEVELOPING A WEAK CLIPPER SYSTEM IN NORTHERN ALBERTA LATER TODAY.

DISCUSSION...

WESTERN PRAIRIES... AS THE UPPER RIDGE BUILDS IN TODAY AND TOMORROW,
MANY PLACES IN ALBERTA WILL EXPERIENCE TEMPERATURES OF 25-30C TODAY
AND TOMORROW. A CHANCE OF SHOWERS EXISTS IN EXTREME NE ALBERTA ALONG
THE ARCTIC FRONT AND NEAR THE LOW THAT MOVES IN FROM THE YUKON.

EASTERN PRAIRIES... A PAIR OF WILDFIRES QUICKLY FLARED UP IN THE
PRINCE ALBERT REGION SUNDAY AFTERNOON, CAUSING SLIGHT REDUCTIONS IN
VISIBILITIES DUE TO SMOKE ALONG WITH A SPIKE IN AQHI TO MODERATE.
CONDITIONS RAPIDLY IMPROVED AROUND SUNSET, THOUGH THE HOTSPOT OF THE
FIRE NORTHWEST OF PRINCE ALBERT CAN STILL BE SEEN THROUGH THE NIGHT
WITH GOES-16. WINDS FOR THE AREA TURN SOUTHWESTERLY TODAY AND WILL
DIRECT ANY REDEVELOPING SMOKE AWAY FROM THE CITY FOR THE DAY.

OTHERWISE, SLIGHTLY COOLER TEMPERATURES ARE ON TAP FOR THE EASTERN
PRAIRIES AS ARCTIC AIR LINGERS FOR THE DAY. THINGS QUICKLY RECOVER
TO THE 30 DEGREE RANGE FOR THE SOUTH ON TUESDAY AS THE NEXT
CLIPPER SYSTEM SLIDES ACROSS THE CENTRAL AREAS OF SK AND MB. ON THE
NORTH SIDE OF THIS LOW, THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF FREEZING RAIN FOR
PARTS OF NORTHERN MANITOBA OVERNIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING BEFORE
CHANGING OVER TO SHOWERS FOR THE AFTERNOON. PRECIPITATION OF ANY
KIND IS UNLIKELY WITH THIS CLIPPER SOUTH OF THE CENTRAL INTERLAKE
AND BERENS RIVER AREAS.

EASTERN ARCTIC...THE GRADIENT OVER SOUTHERN KIVALLIQ REMAINS TIGHT
ENOUGH TO PRODUCE 50G70 KM/H WINDS TODAY BUT SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS
TO VISIBLITY ARE NOT IN THE CARDS WITH THE RELATIVELY MILD
TEMPERATURES. OTHERWISE, JUST SCATTERED FLURRIES UNDER THE UPPER LOW
FOR KIVALLIQ AND ABOUT THE REMNANTS OF YESTERDAY'S SYSTEM FOR BAFFIN.

WESTERN ARCTIC...A LOW FORMS TODAY IN EXTREME NORTHERN ALBERTA ALONG
THE EXISTING ARCTIC FRONT WITH A TROUGH EXTENDING NORTHWARDS. THIS
WILL HELP TO BRING SCATTERED SHOWERS AND FLURRIES TO MANY PARTS OF
THE MACKENZIE RIVER AND GREAT SLAVE LAKE TODAY AND TONIGHT. THERE IS
A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SOME FREEZING RAIN, BUT THE BEST RISK IS EAST
OF THE RIVER WHERE THERE ARE NO POPULATION CENTRES.

END/KNIGHT/ALBERS

Bookmarked! Thanks.

So using their discussion here's a look at the current map with temps.

  • Polar Vortex over Hudson Bay and it looks frigid near it
  • Ridge building in the West, (temps aren't too reflective yet since its early morning there)
  • And there's an Upper Low in the Southeast which is causing all the clouds and rain. Interesting to see an upper low rather than a core of a ridge. Locations under this Low should remain normal or below normal today. While locations with sun to East and north of it will be well above normal
  • Front has stalled across the Midwest and Northeast. 3rd day of 50s now. Philly still in 50s this morning. If sun breaks should spike to 70s

It hit 85f here yesterday, a new daily record. It should be warmer today. It's 8 in the morning and this sun already feels very strong.

Here in Indianapolis, yesterday we tied the old record high of 88F. It was the warmest Mothers Day on record. Today the forecast high is 90 which would break the old record of 88 set way back in 1881 if it happens. Currently it's just 82 at noon and pretty cloudy/hazy so we'll see if the sun can get through to warm things up.

Still a few degrees shy of 90F at Indianapolis. If we do manage to hit that, it would not only be a record high for today but it would be the earliest 90 degree reading of the year since 1959 and the first time since 2012 to hit 90 in the month of May.

This was surprising to see. You are virtually on the southern side of the front and the gradient is so tight between cool air and heat.

3pmEST map

Upper 80s and even 90s in Southern Indiana, not seen with this zoom level. Hot day across Kentucky.

Clouds finally breaking up in the northeast! 68hrs straight without sun here. Sun is out and up we go. Probably passing 60s since 60s don't exist this spring. lolol

Clouds and rain keeping Florida cooler than Illinois .... and maybe Montreal later?

Oh that's nothing. I was paying attention to Phoenix & Vegas and the heat they got was impressive.

Another day that started with low clouds from the Gulf and they've finally burned off and now it's around 89. Drier weather will rule starting tomorrow and it will turn hot! 93 expected tomorrow, 96 Wed, 98 Thurs, and 100 Fri.
