Can someone explain to me how/why sharks are freezing to death in Cape Cod?

My first question is why didn't they go out to sea? If you go a hundred miles out to sea the SST and air temps are way above 40 due to the Gulf Stream.

My second question is that wasn't Boston typically colder in the past, so shouldn't the sharks be adjusted to these temps?

I can understand when the manatees in Florida get cold during the cold snaps there and have to hang out by the warm water exhaust from power plants, but it would seem that the sharks in the Northeast should at least be accustomed to that style of weather...

Awesome history and stats. I enjoyed reading that.
I got 16 in a row in 1961 as the record for NYC. 13 is 3rd longest

Yeah, no idea how sharks plan but would assume they would just head south or east like u said. Maybe it was too sudden and their thinking got disrupted? Maybe they had food nearby and didnt wanna leave?
That reminds me, I think theres one shark named Maria that has a tracking device. Wonder where she is.

How about a frozen Tshirt in South Dakota? Lol. I didnt think this was too interesting. Wouldnt this happen with simply 30F temps? not as fast of course

See all the record lows from 1961? Diurnal ranges were huge. Their all-time record low and jan/feb monthly records were from this cold wave.

karen_in_nh_2012 may like this data for Keene, NH which is about 50 miles north of Amherst. Is there way to show her directly?

It "only" reached -29...but there was a stretch in early February that looks like something from Bodie, California with massive daily ranges: 37/-10, 39/-11, 48/-13, and 53/-1!
I think you'd need to DM karen_in_nh_2012

thanks for posting the table. I'm suspicious of the Amherst stats; so much colder and that cold snap doesn't seem to have that many stories around for how it extreme it was; Albany didn't look as extreme. Your Keene link shows Amherst wasn't the only one with extreme cold; Keene had extreme cold nights, daily highs weren't that extreme. By coldest two week period, 1961 is an extreme outlier, like it came from another climate

Luckily, I saw his post!

I came back because I was flabbergasted when I looked at the 15-day forecast. When I posted back in the very early hours of Thursday 12/28/17 -- basically 3 nights ago -- it looked like we were going to FINALLY get back into the positive numbers for overnight lows starting this coming Wednesday 1/3/18. But NOW it looks like we'll have only a tiny respite before going back into the deep, deep freeze:

- Sunday night (New Year's Eve) -12!! (daytime will reach 8, up from a forecasted 5 a few days ago)
- Monday night -11!! (daytime will again only reach 8, but that's better than the 4 that had been forecast!)
- Tuesday night 1
- Wednesday night 6
- Thursday -8 -- back to the negative numbers!!
- Friday -18 -- WHAT?!!!!!
- Saturday -15
- Sunday -1
- and FINALLY Monday 16. LOOKS like we're pretty much back to normal after that -- but I said that 3 days ago too, then the forecast changed!

Nice to see you again.yeah, this is pretty wicked.

Even down south will feel it now. I think they escaped the previous 2 blasts. This 3rd one currently and a deeper colder one next week will reach further it seems.

GFS has 5000' temps above me at -28C next weekend.

Absolutely brutal here this morning. We've had lower temps but the wind is kicking and you can feel it. First time I've been really cold taking the dogs out since the system moved in. Actual temp is -9ºF but feels like -20s with wind.

Went snowshoeing yesterday in 1ºF and it was balmy ha.
