A few pages back someone looked up the coldest weeks in Amherst, MA. That's incredibly cold, especially with the mild daytime weather. So I had to look up the temperatures. The columns here are Date, Max, Average max, Record high/low Max, Min, Average min, and Record high/low Min. Example: January 17th had a high of 38 and low of 8, when the average is 33/13.

See all the record lows from 1961? Diurnal ranges were huge. Their all-time record low and jan/feb monthly records were from this cold wave.

karen_in_nh_2012 may like this data for Keene, NH which is about 50 miles north of Amherst. Is there way to show her directly?

It "only" reached -29...but there was a stretch in early February that looks like something from Bodie, California with massive daily ranges: 37/-10, 39/-11, 48/-13, and 53/-1!

Great to have it cold enough to kill the bugs.
Our average high and low temperatures for this date are 45 and 28.
Our record high and low temperatures for this date are 70 and 6.
Actual high and low today were 35 and 22.
We just take it one day at a time around here.

Mr. VA has all the cabinet doors open so our water pipes can get all the heat possible. I don't like to go on vacation this time of year so we can keep an eye on the house. Brrrrr! Present temperature is 26. It is very unusual for us to get under 20 degrees.

You live in the mountains right? Its not unusual to get below 20 in any part of the state except a few coastal locations.

Went down to 35F last night. Brrrrr, I couldn't live in such a cold climate like... NYC.

This global warming is sure picking up pace.

Ah duh.
I'll assume decreasing sea ice is disrupting the polar jet.
And leave you meteorologists to figure out the remainder.

Yesterdays Max Temp December 28, 2017. Didn't pass 20s across Virginia either. 80s in South Florida.

coldest forecast I've seen

A pattern I notice is that temperatures and dewpoints are roughly rising and falling in sync with each other. Typical setup on dry days with big diurnal ranges is for the dewpoint to stay nearly constant maybe rise slightly during the day while the temperature has a big rise and then falls to about the dewpoint overnight. Maybe that's why the diurnal ranges aren't as large as most other cold, dry spells.

No more Jan 4th storm now, lol! GFS model suppresses the storm so far south that it now goes through Florida with some rain then out to sea

Welcome back to 1980s? Cold but lack of snow. Bring on spring if that's the case. lol We'll see if models come back around to phasing sooner. Still 6 days away.

Full sun here as I gathered some firewood. Only 13°F outside. Finally getting used to the daytime teens now.

Is that snow with single digits in Iowa and MN? What's that like?

11amEST Temps

6° Boston
16° in NYC
18° Nantucket (what are the water temps like?)

20° in Philly
22° Atlantic City
