meh. it clouded over around 1 pm. Thought it was the front edge of the warm air mass coming and condensing. Could just be getting gloom from the lake? Looks like it was just clouds to the north, dunno what the cause was.

2 things...

1. Pacific airmass providing the warmth in this region.

Quote:
National Weather Service New York NY
624 AM EST Sat Jan 20 2018

Unseasonably mild conditions today, with confluent PAC/polar
jet to the north of the region.. A breezy WSW flow
(gusts 30 to 35 mph) and fair skies with a PAC airmass will
provide an unseasonably mild day with highs in the upper 40s to
lower 50s
2... all winter it seems like Sub Tropical Jet stream has been active...When it phases with the northern jet stream you get big snowstorms, This time the plains and midwest are getting it. The East will get a moist warm front.

Quote:
Models in good agreement with PAC shortwave energy digging through
the SW states, and eventually phasing with subtropical jet
energy tonight into Sunday. The resultant deep closed upper low
is then expected to track NE across the Central Plains and Mid
Mississippi valley Sun into Mon, before beginning to phase with
northern stream energy as it swings into the NE US on Tuesday.

subtropical moisture plume with PW +2
to + 3 standard deviations above normal over the region,.

So this is where the snowstorm will be

As long as u got the STJ active you get these chances of big snowstorms because theres more chances of it merging with the northern jet.. But obviously wont always be in same region. And these dont happen everyday or even week

I don't know about any snow accumulations here. Unless it's raparound snow as the system pulls out, it's should be a big rain even for us.

kinda boring; gloomy 35°F at 9 am. Supposed to warm up to 47°F and sunny; which would be the warmest sunny day in a month and a hal. hope the clouds actually clear. The street is still covered in half an inch of packed snow, hope it melts this weekend.

current clouds:

Thick line just off the Northeast coast right over me. Further inland its broken clouds. On the coast clear. Is something building up the clouds right here? May have been mentioned earlier, but just noticed. New GOES site, beautiful color, or lots of different wavelength bands if you like detail and can figure out what each band means. Another website that has good cloud visualization:

via https://www.ventusky.com/?p=40.9;-81.4;5&l=clouds

looks a bit different: band of overcast right by me, but clear further inland rather than broken overcast. Binghamton is reporting clear while Syracuse is overcast. Either the ventusky map is wrong, or the skies just cleared upstate.

Warming up today with southerly flow and a bit of rain. At 11 AM it was 54F (12C) and overcast. Dewpoint of 52F (11C). NWS is forecasting a high of 66F (19C); a big difference from what it's been.

Crazy how warm the mid-30s feels in January as opposed to November.
