This winter is only tied for 28th coldest to date in OKC. While there have been some impressive cold snaps, the intervening mild days are keeping it from being well below normal overall. I liked the winter I experienced out east, but it's just been so dry back here, with less than an inch of precipitation since the last week of October.

I'm still calling for early spring with February ending well above normal. I'll probably be wrong but im sticking to that. I cant imagine 3 months well below normal. Feels weird. Lol

First we had all time record cold... then we had record snowfall, and now as a result? Recodd cold once more... this cold blast was not even forecast to drop me below 20 untill this snowstorm... ended up at 11 and some places were in single digits which tied many record lows across the state... this is an extremely rare onc ein a century kinda winter... last good jan here was 2013... ever since then inly 1 jan avoided record cold (2016) and it was still below average

That would be nice! Currently January's average temp here in Indy is running 11.5F below normal. The average low for the month so far is a whopping 13F below the normal. But with the cold we've missed out on the snow. We've had just 3.6 inches so far and January typically averages 8.6 inches. Most of our forecasters back in their winter outlook in November called for a snowier winter than normal with most of the snow coming in the back half of winter, February and lasting into March. Then again, any year that forces me to start mowing the lawn again in March is not a good year. It's April or nothing!

The lake effect snow machine has been strong this year with the cold air! We've had a total of about 7 inches of snow in December and January here in Indianapolis only about half of our normal total by now. Up in South Bend, about 2 hours north and close to Lake Michigan, they've had 51 inches of snow in December and January so far! They almost doubled their normal snowfall for December and halfway through January they are just an inch shy of their normal snowfall for this month as well.

Incredible difference just couple hours away. Have the lakes shut off now? Are they frozen over enough?
I wonder if the impressive January anomaly will hold. While I don't see any "torch" pattern I do see warmups which will eat into the anomaly but maybe not much. Your area has missed all the snow this season. Not sure if that will change now. Maybe. Still 2 mths left.

Speaking of warmth.........

This weekend and early next week as the Jet stream dips in the west
