seems like the snow is starting before the Arctic air digs in, but -10°C or -15°C 5000 feet temperatures should start the lake effect snow engine going. Btw, what do you think of western NY compared to southern Vermont? Like one better than the other? Similar? Or feel very different? The area of Vermont you visited is more touristy. At the peak of the cold next week. Cold but not the coldest air mass we've gotten in the last few years; my coldest arctic air outbreak [Feb 13, 2016] was -30°C. Cold centered rather far east, aiming towards Quebec rather than centered in the Upper Midwest; well it's centered of Minnesota tomorrow moves east fast. 850 hPa temperatures around -20°C, Mt. Washington should be very cold.

It's December.. What's the coldest airmass we've gotten for December last decade or so?
Should be -22C over Albany, normal is -7C.. Last time there was a -22C airmass overhead was December 2000.

Yes, Fast moving storm coming across today will drop 3-6", then the arctic air blasts in and enhances the LES. So first its the storm.
"This particular ridge feature will extend from coastal California and
British Columbia across the North Pole to the Barents Sea. This will
force the polar vortex and some of the coldest air in the northern
hemisphere to be dislodged to the south across Ontario and Quebec...
some 500-1000 miles further south than usual. In fact...H85 temps <-30c
will be uncomfortably close over eastern Canada while H85 temps
colder than -20c for our region"

Felt very different. Couldn't choose which I liked better. I think Western NY better because it felt and looked more rural/country like. They both had their pluses for lack of congestion but again I think Western NY wins that as well having more "open" roads and less tourists around.. Scenery is about the same. Weather I haven't experienced enough for both spots.
TWC not showing anything 60F or above in the 15 day forecast! Right now has a chance of freezing rain on New Year's Day.
