The ones typically mentioned are the Sub Tropical Jet and the Mid latitude (also known as Northern Jet Stream). When those 2 meet up, that's when you get big storms.

Surface map Wednesday 8am per GFS... See the front and the change to snow behind it? That's is wicked.. Rain and 40s/50s then snow and 20s/30s. That's when you really feel it big time.
I personally don't think it will change to snow for I-95 corridor. We'll see.
Gets more exciting after the front but I'll stop here for now..
