Rain in the morning washed all the snow away. Patches of blue sky now. Ground is muddy with lots puddles, soil is all saturated. Monthly rainfall for this month and last was about normal, takes much less rain to saturate the soil when it's cold and the plants aren't growing.

Only about a third of average rainfall to date here. 0.59". And any precipitation we get in the next week will likely be snow.

The cold spell here has resulted in a moderate snowfall today (8cm) onto ground which was frozen for 3 or 4 days. Perhaps -4C, 25f tonight followed by a few chilly days (0 to 2c, 32 to 36f). Next week a return to mild South Westerlies with temps in the high 40s f, 8-9C.

Once again I am surprised you even had snow. I believe you are the furthest south to have any snow on the ground this morning. So I checked.

Looks like some spots in CT did this morning but probably higher elevation than you. Where is that 2 inches for MA? Holland? Sturbridge?

Here's Concord area... Looks like 3-5" snow depth there this morning little north of Concord.

What a winter for Iowa. Not historic but at least active and interesting since November I believe.

NWS NY sees what I saw for next weeks storm. As soon as the Euro shows it watch them change their tune. Until then... Im calling BS on the GFS and Canandian models. But notice they still had to put "chance of snow" in there. Lol. Cover themselves.

Euro is flat, GFS phases the Jet Streams. Usually its the opposite this far out.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
531 PM EST SAT JAN 16 2016

MODEL SOLUTIONS DIVERGE FOR THE END OF THE WEEK INTO THE FIRST HALF
OF THE WEEKEND AS A SOUTHERN STREAM STORM PUSHES OFF THE EAST COAST
AND HEADS NORTHEAST. THE 12Z ECMWF HAS A FLATTER PATTERN AND PASSES
THE STORM WELL SOUTH AND EAST OF THE AREA WITH LITTLE TO NO IMPACT.
THE 12Z GFS HAS A MORE DIRECT IMPACT WITH A STRONG NOR`EASTER
IMPACTING THE AREA LATE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY. GIVEN THE
UNCERTAINTY...WILL CONTINUE WITH JUST SLIGHT CHANCE FOR SNOW...WITH
A CHANGEOVER TO RAIN ALONG THE COAST SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

THE MAIN STORY FOR THIS PERIOD HOWEVER WILL BE THE TEMPERATURES.
HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL LIKELY NOT GET OUT OF THE 20S MON THRU
TUE...WITH LOWS IN THE TEENS MON NIGHT. WITH WNW WINDS OF 15 TO 25
MPH AND GUSTS IN THE 30S LIKELY...WIND CHILLS WILL BE IN THE SINGLE
DIGITS AND TEENS MON AND TUE...WITH POTENTIAL FOR SUBZERO WIND
CHILLS 0 TO 5 BELOW ZERO MON NIGHT. HIGH TEMPS SHOULD MODERATE
SLIGHTLY FOR THE MID TO LATE WEEK...BUT LIKELY NOT GET MUCH ABOVE
THE LOWER TO MIDDLE 30S FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK WITH REGION
UNDER INFLUENCE OF NORTHERN STREAM.

A good amount of time ago I had a job interview in the county south of Mason City, IA. Yes, it can get very cold there, nothing to stop the wind as the trees tend to only be closer to rivers and windbreaks by houses and outbuildings.

Nice area to work. I think I would like Iowa.

Here's Waterloo's OBS. 830'. Looks like about 6 times above normal with the max the others near or below.. Check out some lows this month. -8°F I believe is the lowest. Well below normal. Today didn't pass 14°F which is closer to their normal low.

December 10th didn't pass 1°F? Gees.
