that is totally the same trip i took a year ago, around the same time. went through the Florida Panhandle, Mobile, AL... New Orleans, and rural LA looking at the beautiful plantation homes. Oak Alley and Houmas House were my favorite... very beautiful part of our country that is often overlooked. New Orleans was cloudy and muggy just like it was for you
Surprised the flow of Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls is so low, didn't the area get lots of rain?
The stream that feeds the falls doesn't carry much water. Even after torrential rainfall, a couple days later the stream is nearly dry.

What's the biggest hike you've done in the western US?
Hmm, let's see. I'll include the Canadian Rockies.
"Biggest" meaning length was the 11 mile Iceline Trail in Yoho National Park, British Columbia with 2300 ft elevation gain.
Yosemite Falls was 7 miles long with 2700 ft elevation gain. La Luz Trail near Albuquerque was about 10 miles long with a 3800 ft descent. We rode the cable car up. Does that count?
The hike to Harney Peak in SD was also 7 miles long, but only 1100 ft elevation gain.
This noise is pretty common, but I'm not sure what insect this is?
A Cicada of some sort - a nice quiet one at that. They get extremely noisy, and go 24hours during the hottest weeks of summer.
Doesn't Paris have Cicadas?
