I like those narrow streets. Was there a nice pub around there?

Plenty of pubs, shops selling fossils, fudge, pasties etc etc. The building with the tree ferns, olives and peppers growing outside is a dinosaur and fossil museum.

Nice. Hence the place name. Did you stop in any of the pubs for a tipple?

"Arrr, ciideer"

Interesting photos -would like to visit this Fossil Coast.

Not much sea breeze in Lyme Regis? -=The beach is the last place one would expect to see such green grass.

Decided to hike the tallest mountain in NY. Mt Marcy. Unfortunately came 2 days after a cold shot so it was during a warming trend although that meant staying under 72 anyway in the Lake Placid NY area.

August 31, 2015
Summit Elevation: 5344'
Elevation gain: 3300'
Calories Burned: 3100
Time up to Summit: 4.5hrs
Time back down to car: 3.5hrs
Total miles hiked: 16 miles. 7am-3pm
Temp going up 61-63°F(16-17C) & Humid
Temp at Summit: 58F(14C) with 50mph sustained wind. Wind Chill of 51F(11C) & in the Clouds.
Temp coming down: 65-72°F(18-22C) & Muggy
Drive time: 4.5hrs to Adk Loj and 4.5hrs back home

1st 2 miles were easy, pretty much flat. Less than 200' elevation gain. Bummed it was in the 60s but at least cloudy

Got to an open view, something told me it might be cloudy on top of the mountain. This isn't the mountain in front. Sign says Black bears are loose.

Trail got rocky

And muddy at times. Thought there hasn't been rain lately?

Above 4000', no views.. Bummed but a surprise at the top. Occasional wind breezes while we were on the trail below 4000'. Clouds were moving FAST.

My favorite sign..

Soon above the tree line... More Confiners now above about 4000'. Ahhhh, Christmas tree scent and fresh air! Just so nice to be around. But the fun soon begins as the last 2 miles are much more challenging.

After 7.5 miles of hiking for 4 hours this is what you need to do to get to top... Not just once either. There were a few more climbs before this but I was too lazy to get my camera out..

And just as you get to the top of the rocks... it wasn't it... there's more climbing. This was after the picture above... After multiple times we were like WOW!

And then you can't even see ahead if this was the actual top so you have to keep walking into the clouds and make sure you don't step on the fragile new Alpine growth..

Will that be the top finally up there?

Spoiler

YES! And As I suspected... In the clouds and was chilly after the workout and sweat! Shorts and Short sleeves is all I had. No views but the experience of the wind and clouds was amazing!

Quick view from the top. Watch my friend disappear into the clouds as I try to keep the camera still in the crazy wind! Apparently a dry front was passing through.

Ate lunch and sat up there sheltered behind a big rock for 20 min... As we headed back down it started to open up but seconds later more clouds.. We weren't going to wait.

The Plaque at the Top

Spoiler

Driving back home looking back. Cloud base was about 4500'. This was a nice experience although a very long hike. The clouds and wind was a more interesting experience than a calm clear sunny day.

Back home temp was in the 80s. Was nice to spend the day in the 60s mostly and 50s at the top.

Nice! Wondering if you had gone there. Too bad you didn't get a clear view, but interesting looking summit. Looks similar to the Whites, but terrain maybe a bit different? Treeline appears a bit higher. How'd you figure out the wind strength?

Sounds like an awesome day - I wanna climb Mt Marcy...lol. Can't believe you drove 4.5 hours and hiked for 8 and drove 4.5 back - isn't there any place to stay near the base?

Great pics, btw - I'd preferred a clear day myself for the views, but the coolness and wind is always nice.

Oh, the day I went to Lake Placid ('11) - it was 91 in town, and about 65 on the top of Whiteface Mtn - it was clouded over and windy at the top as well. I'd not been complaining about a 72...lol.

The grass isn't directly at the beach, it's on top of the hills and the cliffs. Most UK beaches have green very close; West Wittering has grass on the dunes next to the water.
