SASKATOON – According to Environment Canada, southern Saskatchewan is in for a drastic change in weather Friday night.

Currently very mild temperatures at or a few degrees below zero are seen across much of the southern portion of the province.

By Friday night, a low pressure system tracking across southern Saskatchewan will push a cold front southward spreading snow and rapidly falling temperatures.

The worst conditions are expected overnight into Saturday morning when the snowfall is expected to intensify.

Five to ten centimetres of snow is expected accompanied by northerly winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

Temperatures are expected to plummet into the minus double digits, with wind chill values in the -25 to -35 range by Saturday morning

Localized blizzard conditions with gusts as high as 80 km/h are possible early Saturday morning in the Cypress Hills area.

Holiday travellers should be aware that road conditions are expected to deteriorate.

BTW... Even if you're not a weather geek you have to appreciate the "timing" of weather. Lets use this weekend for example.

You have a clipper, you have a southern storm. They will not phase in time to create a huge snowstorm. However, Vermont, NH, and Maine will benefit from it.

Had they met up and transferred energy to a coastal storm AND had there been some decent blocking, then we would have ourselves a nice snowstorm from DC to Maine.

Watch Jan3-5 time frame still, some indications that a "phase" of the Jet Streams happens.

But I recommend you watching the loop of the GFS and look at this weekend. It's pretty fascinating to see the phase happen too late for Mid Atlantic/Northeast.

Sick..

Euro12z 850 anomalies Tues-Wed-Thurs next week.

These are anomalies not temps and Anomalies this far below in January is impressive stuff.

Lakes & Rivers will be freezing down here more than they are even now. All that cold air right over the Atlantic too will cool those waters down even more.

Maine is having a classic winter. In the line of fire. Winter Storm Watches are up already for Sunday/Monday. Same areas that got an ice storm last week.

COASTAL STORM TO BRING SNOW SUNDAY NIGHT...
.A FAST MOVING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE UP THE
NORTHEAST COAST AND ACROSS CAPE COD SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS WILL SPREAD
SNOW INTO MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE BEGINNING SUNDAY EVENING AND
ENDING EARLY MONDAY MORNING. ALTHOUGH THIS WILL BE A FAST MOVING
STORM... IT WILL LIKELY PRODUCE A BAND OF HEAVY SNOWFALL. SOME OF
THE PRECIPITATION MAY FALL AS RAIN NEAR THE COAST OF MAINE AND
ACROSS SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE... LIMITING TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS
THERE. INLAND AREAS OF CENTRAL NEW HAMPSHIRE AND WESTERN MAINE...
ALONG WITH THE MIDCOAST REGION OF MAINE... ARE EXPECTED TO BE MOST
IMPACTED BY HEAVY SNOWFALL.

306 PM EST FRI DEC 27 2013

WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH

MONDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY
MORNING.

* HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW.

* ACCUMULATIONS......SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 6 TO 10 INCHES

* TIMING...BEGINNING SUNDAY EVENING AND ENDING BY EARLY MONDAY
MORNING.

Ok so.... Which would you rather have??
  1. Temps 0-25° for many days with no precip
OR

2. Temps in 20s and snowstorm

Apparently #1 is Euro, #2 is GFS right now. Can't wait to see who gives in.

Latest GFS18z transfers the clipper system off NJ coast Thursday night next week to the coastal storm on Jan 3rd. Blizzard for New England on this run.

So the Last 4 runs has the coastal while Euro does not..

Not 1... but 2.

Latest GFS shows 2 snowstorms for New England, one of them being a blizzard.

On the left are the 6 hour snow totals for this Sunday night. Areas in White and light gray are basically 1-2" per hour snow rates.

On the right is the storm it shows for January 3rd. If this happens, nobody would be going anywhere Friday morning in Maine. That's Whiteout conditions and 1-3" per hour rates. NICE!

6-13 inches of snow in 6 hours?????
