And the thaw begins...

...ICE JAMS POSSIBLE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS..

ICE HAS FORMED ON MANY RIVERS AND STREAMS THROUGHOUT THE AREA AS A
RESULT OF RECENT COLD TEMPERATURES. AS THIS ICE SHIFTS, INDIVIDUAL
CHUNKS ARE CARRIED DOWNSTREAM WHERE THEY COLLECT NEAR BENDS IN THE
STREAM BANKS OR NEAR BRIDGE ABUTMENTS, FORMING ICE JAMS. THESE ICE
JAMS CAN FORM AND BREAK SUDDENLY WITH LITTLE LEAD TIME FOR PROTECTIVE
ACTION.

SEVERAL ICE JAMS HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED ON AREA RIVERS SINCE
WEDNESDAY MORNING, AND MORE ARE POSSIBLE UNTIL THE ICE MOVES OUT
ALTOGETHER LATE THIS WEEKEND WHEN WARMER AIR AND RAIN ARRIVE.
RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES ALONG RIVERS AND LARGER STREAMS IN EASTERN
PENNSYLVANIA AND CENTRAL AND NORTHERN NEW JERSEY SHOULD REMAIN
AWARE OF ICE CONDITIONS IN THEIR AREA AND BE PREPARED FOR RAPID
CHANGES IN WATER LEVELS SHOULD AN ICE JAM FORM OR BREAK. BOTH THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE RIVER ICE SITUATION, AND WARNINGS WILL BE
ISSUED AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

I got a message that "all travel is at your own risk" and to plan on being snowed in by later this afternoon, because roads won't be plowed again until tomorrow morning. I just drove into town and there's about 6-7" of snow on the roads now, but I didn't have any trouble getting there and back. The wind is about 30 mph with higher gusts, so drifting and visibilty are more of an issue than snowfall.

Well... should I say goodbye? We have snow piles still remaining everywhere from the January 2nd snowstorm. We have light snow coming tomorrow but then the downpours begin on Saturday.

Also noticed the grass finally turning brown in spots. Bet you it greens up by next week now.

Why does the snow melt so fast in america? Its only warmed up today,
Here it would take multiple days at that depth.

Even if it rained.

In the forests above 1500feet that kind of snow would last in patches for upto 10 days with 6/7c.

So?

If its been like -20c the snow should be rock hard and 5c will easily sustain snow of several feet
