Now awaits the Strat warming and the Greenland Block!
Yeah, we're all learning (or remembering) that the NAO doesn't have to be negative when you have the proper blocking in the Pacific sending a trough into the U.S. Add a vortex break from the poles in our direction and boom. Winter.

I adore this forecast I don't see often. Bottom one relates to my location better than the top.

"Current" look at the temps at 850mb. One sided tilt.. Asia to North America. That's been the theme this year and you don't change that on a fast pace. Upper flow take a lot of time and a massive amount of energy to shift patterns so I don't see Europe getting the vortex's..

Playing the future loop, the Polar vortex's just sit and spin and drop into Canada and U.S and Asia on & on and disappear as they try to loop towards Europe. Looks like fun times here January and February. We'll see.

BTW, that Blue blob is the Polar vortex -25°C. I rarely see the whites deep in the U.S let alone the blues. We'll see.

Lake effect snow in Chicago...I remember a storm, 1960 something...1967... Our dog disappeared in the yard, the snow came up clear to the porch, which had eight steps.

Heavy snow, wet. The electic was out for days. Never seen a storm like that since!

Prediction of lows by NOAA dropped from 7 F to 2 F. Temperatures are well below average, but I would not call it record setting cold. The record low here for January is -17.5 F in 1983. I highly doubt temperatures will drop that low here.

I like it cold, but single digits are stretching my cold tolerance bounds.

Sometimes Chicago benefits from lake moisture, but usually it's on the south or east end of the lake.

Yeah that was the "Big Snow" Blizzard of 1967.

Chicago's 10 biggest Snowstorms:

23.0 inches Jan 26-27, 1967
21.6 inches Jan 1-3, 1999
21.2 inches Jan 31-Feb 2, 2011
20.3 inches Jan 12-14, 1979
19.2 inches Mar 25-26, 1930
16.2 inches Mar 7-8, 1931
14.9 inches Jan 30, 1939
14.9 inches Jan 6-7, 1918
14.8 inches Dec 17-19, 1929
14.3 inches Mar 25-26, 1970

Here is a snowfall map from the Groundhog's Day Blizzard in 2011

And lake effect did boost some local totals in this storm as well.

What was wild about this blizzard, was also the fact that it produced 63 lightning strikes

I'm sick and tired of this rainy, cloudy, gloomy, hot weather!!! it's been in the 80s almost every day this month and at night we only cool off into the 70s. this would be fine if it wasn't winter!!. I have yet to have a single night with temps below 50. snowbound send me a good cold snap that lasts a few days.

Given the options of who to ask up here I'm probably your safest bet (Manitoba will send you to the abyss). So will do my best (Manitoba can send their joys to Texas). As if that will happen but I can dream!!!
