It was going to be a 32 story residential built in downtown to pay homage to the ritzy Shamrock Hotel lots of famous kings, queens, presidents, & movie stars used to stay at while in Houston. I think it was over by where the Astrodome sits now if I'm not mistaken. Built in 1949 there was literally nothing else quite like it in the world. It was 18 stories high & had over 800 rooms. It had a swimming pool the size of a small lake apparently they used to put boats in & water ski!!!

It was on Main just across from the TMC transit center.

It would be nice if DT got a nice new glitzy hotel though.

Then the Statler-Hilton came along and put that hotel to shame.

Shamrock Hotel was just way cooler man. It featured the worlds largest outdoor swimming pool during its hey day & was a resort of sorts for wealthy kings, queens, presidents, & movie stars rubbing elbows with every day folk.

In the article it states it had over 800 rooms however Wikipedia puts it at 1,100 or 99 more than the Statler-Hilton in Dallas had.

The art deco style with its neon green Shamrock sign atop the green tile slanted roof was pretty sweet you have to admit.

As tacky, contrived, and overpriced that bridge is; there is a method to Dallas' madness. The city has a vision of what it wants to be and a plan for getting there (as opposed to Houston which throws crap up helter skelter or is always late to the party).

I've said it before but if Houston had Dallas' attitude and vision it would be one of the top tier cities. Likewise, if Dallas had Houston's substance (history, culture, diversity, economy) it would be top tier as well.

I think the first part of this was a little harsh but your second paragraph was pretty spot on... Dallas has GREAT ambition which I love but at the same time lacks some of the substance of Houston. Houston has the substance, but sometimes lacks the ambition.

At least both cities are moving in the right direction

Built in 1956, the Statler-Hilton Hotel was the largest hotel west of the Mississippi. The hotel was 20 stories and had 1,001 rooms.

The first hotel to have....

-elevator music
-central TV reception, and a set in every room
-function rooms on the lower floors, allowing visitors to reach them easily without an elevator
-a large, open ballroom free of any columns
-modern conference and exhibit facilities, with moveable partitions and a flexible lighting system in the ballroom, and a range of smaller meeting rooms nearby, all with ample power outlets for easy set up of exhibit booths

The hotel had the largest ballroom west of Chicago. (They originally planned to have the largest ballroom but the largest beam that could be produced in Dallas was 94 ft.)

The building was also one of the first in the nation to use a thin-skinned curtain wall design, with the outer wall consisting of 1 3/8” thick panels of glass and porcelain coated steel.

Y shape of the hotel provided for an off-street drive for guests arriving by car, and also gave a bit of additional privacy to the units on the back side of the hotel (since their windows were angled away from each other)
