Oh, I remember KBAT - their studios were on Bandera Road, just down the road from my parents' liquore store and the old Texas Star Inn - and across the road from the old Sinclair station (just past Leon Creek). That was 680 AM....

In 1965 KBAT was broadcasting from a huge old mansion at the NE corner of San Pedro and Ashby.

there was a DJ booth in the center of the lobby.

I remember when the DJ locked himself in and played Eve of Destruction over and over and over.

Looked up the history on KBAT and I do remember some clown doing the same song over and over. It was a publicity stunt kinda thing. The DJ broadcasted from the old house at Ashby and San Pedro. Not sure what's in there now but it was a dental office at one time afterwards.

Refresh my memory George, just where was the Sinclair gas station? There was Shamrock right across from the towers. They actually got stupid and gave me my first credit card while I was still in high school. I don't remember Andersons having a gas pump and the only other stations out there in the 60's was the Enco in the Valley or Topperwiens out near Helotes.

Shamrock was originally a Sinclair - don't remember exactly when they changed, but I think it was right about the time that Frenchie started workin' there.

Yeah - Meiske's (and then Bradford's, IRRC - he was the one w/the hottie wife that ran off with some other feller) was the Enco/Exxon....and I think those were the only 2 stations in the area.

My uncle used to own a Sinclair station. They were bought out by Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) around 1969. In the mid 70s ARCO started selling off the old Sinclair stations and Diamond Shamrock started buying them up through the mid 80's. In early 2000 Valero purchased the Diamond Shamrock division. Two months ago Valero announce they had come to an agreement with Chevron, so expect the signs to change again soon.

Valero bought a Chevron refinery in the U.K. Personally, I have doubts that would be enough to trigger a re-branding of Valero, in favor of Chevron.

In fact, there are still some Valero retail outlets in other markets that go by names like Beacon, Ultramar, even Shamrock, though some of those names are being phased out in favor of the Valero brand.

Hi all, my first post here. I grew up in AH, went to San Antonio Academy, Woodridge, AHJHS, AHHS and lived and worked there until 1980.

I stayed at a place called Dan Cook's Time Out on Austin Hwy about 1976 for a month waiting to deploy to Germany, they even kicked me out of my room to shoot a scene for the Rolling Thunder Movie. Anyway I was looking for photos of the place since I stayed there and had some good times there.

I'm trying to figure this one out. I know Dan Cook had a place called the Time Out, but I thought it was on San Pedro. Maybe I'm thinkg of The Bijou. Maybe you stayed at the Sheraton, which burned down a few years ago and is replaced by a bunch of apts. There was a club in that Sheraton, but don't think it was Time Out. I do remember the Peppermint on San Pedro and Dirty Sallys on Austin Hwy

Dan Cook did have a place on Austin Highway called Time Out. It was located across the street from the Bentwood Apartments that were torn down a few years ago. It would have been about where the dentist's office is now, the one with the windmill out in front.
