The Joy became a porn theatre in the 60s. Before that, it ran sub run films.

Heading towards the Texas from the Joy was the Prince, which later became the Teatro Nacional in the 70s, then it was renamed the Dollar Theatre, and went out as the Plaza.

I was seeing 2nd run movies at the Joy theatre in the late 60's. It probably went to adult movies in the 70's.

Does anyone remember "Atlantic City" on Fredricksburg road, just a mile or so south of 410? It would have been there around 65 or 1966...

I think you may be thinking of Atlantic Mills. Spartan Department stores later merged with Atlantic Mills, and it became Spartan/Atlantic. I worked there during the Christmas season 1971 putting together bicycles for extra money. When I was a kid, I loved to go to Atlantic Mills because they had a lot of pinball machines in the entrance area, and they just required a nickel to play!

I had a chance to talk at length with one of the guys running crews building the tower and lifting the restaurant to the top. He told me how the construction elevator was mounted on the outside of the tower stem and the 4 inch gap between the elevator platform and the stem was the biggest 4 inches he ever crossed.

A few memories in my short 33 year life, 31 of it in SA:

Joskes
Central Park Mall
Rollercade (still there I know, but many great memories as a kid)
Fargo's pizza at 281 & Brookhollow, they'd show three stooges cartoons in a back room
Buying our new car at Smith Chevrolet downtown
Eating at Little Hipps on it's last day of business, 11/22/02
Chuck E Cheese birthday parties at the Rector & McCullough location
Watching the planes land at SA international from a parked car at Hwy 281
The observation deck at SA international.

The Fargo's on Military Dr. also had films in the back. We'd have to ask them to put them on because it was usually empty. Good times as a kid with my siblings watching them.

I totally forgot about when watching the planes land by pulling off onto a little hill near the fence line was allowed. They must have ended it sometime during the early 90's or very late 80's. It was sort of magical. Used to live in a house right on the flight path of certain planes, be able to look out the window and see them fly over, that was nice too but it was not as close as that fence line.

Fargos also had a location on Evers at Wurzbach.

There was one at NW Military and Lockhill Selma too. And I believe there was one in the World of Sports at I-10 and De Zavala. That was a long time ago.
