Depends on what day it is, and to whom I'm addressing such a greeting! I don't celebrate Christmas myself, nor do most of my family members & a small portion of my friends... so it would be rather silly to wish my Jewish family members or Hindu, Jewish & Buddhist friends a "Merry Christmas," especially if it were any day but December 25th.

But if I'm at work (I work with the public) and the patron is wearing a Christmas sweater, sure why not? We had a Holiday Party at the library this week, complete with a visit from Santa & Mrs. Claus, and I wished many families a Merry Christmas - even wore a Santa hat myself! As for holiday/Christmas/Chanukah/etc cards, I don't send those in bulk anymore. So if I give a card to somebody who's celebrating Christmas, it will say Merry Christmas... and likewise for any other person & holiday.

What are they being educated about, exactly? Do you really think ANY kids, regardless of their religious beliefs, don't know about Christmas by now? I mean, really... I was raised by two Jewish parents, and still knew more about Christmas than 99% of Gentiles know about any of our holidays. Sounds like you're applauding "selective education," which is actually the very definition of indoctrination. Ironic, huh?

Merry Christmas to you, and Oh, to the man upstairs, "Happy Birthday, Jesus Christ."

Thanks, and same to you!!!! Some would consider our little 'burgh totally unprogressive, but that is why we live here!

By the way, there is a manger scene prominently displayed in our small town square, along with the Christmas trees and Santa's Cottage.

I do but am feeling increasingly pressured not to do so. I'm sad about that. It's called "Christmas", but my wife didn't dare use "that" word in the 100s of "Holiday Cards" we just sent to past and current clients, friends and family. Only very close family get a "Christmas card" anymore.

She has a point. Why risk offending someone? But still. Seems like the new avatar for the season ought to be egg shells and tip toes. The spirit is different.

Steve
Who is pressuring you?
I'd rather be inclusive and welcome everyone than be exclusive with demanding that everyone celebrate as the c's do.
If you feel so pressured by something so trivial, why would anyone trust you to rationally deal with real pressures?

If your wife chooses to be fearful of using a word, what does that say about her?
Don't blame others for your personal actions and choices.

There are just so many people now that are either just bitter, sour and/or depressed or those that have different belief systems that I save my merrys for those who are close. I truly don't want to offend anyone. I do think this might be different depending on where you live though.
Yet you assume, not knowing these people, that they are "bitter, sour and/or depressed" or ford forbid, have a different belief system.
Good go. Kind of negates the whole idea of the holiday season when you spend it judging others and assigning them with negative attributes because you feel like it.

So, no nod to any of the Jewish community in your burb?
How perfectly 50s style exclusive of you.

All the time......I quit worrying about offending people a long time ago, as has my wife.

I pretty much feel the same way....if someone has an issue because I said "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" etc, they need to examine their own miserable existence.
Not my problem.

That's assuming they have any Jewish folks living there, LOL. We do tend to avoid communities that describe themselves as "unprogressive" - as such a mindset doesn't often fare well for us, ya know.

Hard to process in this day and age, you know?
Guess I should be happy of the fact that even though I grew up in a similar place, my parents bothered to take me to a city (60 miles away) and expose me to those alien cultures on a regular basis.
Pastrami on rye is next to godliness.
Especially with a pickle.

If there were Jewish citizens in our community, we would most certainly see that they were included in the display. But there aren't, that I know of.

Our town isn't "exclusive", it is what it is.
