rah62 said she replies "Merry Christmas" back to people who wish her, but she is reminding people on this forum that not everyone celebrates, so what's the big deal with Happy Holidays?
When my son was four years old we were shopping and nice clerk wished us a Merry Christmas. My little son said, "We are Jews. We aren't Americans and we don't celebrate Christmas."
He was a little confused about the American/Christian thing, but I took the time to teach him to politely say "thank you" because the man was just being friendly.
The same goes for Happy Holidays. Why get upset with a friendly greeting?
It's a shame you didn't let your son stick with his original inclination. At least it was honest.
I don't thank people for being incorrect. I don't automatically wish every black person "Happy Kwanzaa" so people shouldn't automatically assume everyone recognizes "Christmas".
Do you still say Merry Christmas in person, cards, etc?
I do but am feeling increasingly pressured not to do so. I'm sad about that. It's called "Christmas", but my wife didn't dare use "that" word in the 100s of "Holiday Cards" we just sent to past and current clients, friends and family. Only very close family get a "Christmas card" anymore.
She has a point. Why risk offending someone? But still. Seems like the new avatar for the season ought to be egg shells and tip toes. The spirit is different.

if i was a real estate agent in a city like austin, and my name essentially doubled as a business brand, then i guess i might think twice about saying 'merry christmas.'
but for me , it never really crossed my mind to say 'happy holidays.' i always say 'merry christmas.'

(PS: I'm not a she.)
OK, then I think you are probably found to be a huge pain in the rear-end. You're probably one of those people who when asked, "How are you?", you start listing all of your troubles and ailments.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, are all social niceties. If someone who knew I was Jewish said Merry Christmas, then I might say something. But a clerk in a store doesn't need to be "educated" I think my son was very rude when he answered back like that, but he was only four.
On the other hand, the jerks on this board who gleefully could care less about anyone else's religion and take a my way or the highway view of religion are more annoying than you are.
Yup that time of year again. The time to see endless threads about how it isn't Kosher to say Christmas or Christmas tree. That time of year when the media puts stories up everywhere about nativity scenes being told to be taken off public property to rile up the masses. Yup, That time of year again.
I oftentimes say "Christmas", but I say "Happy Holidays" sometimes - especially on here just to **** people off for my own amusement. And I don't get all huffy if someone says either of them to me.
I think people should stop being such whiny little cry babies on all sides and just let everyone call it whatever the heck they want.
I look kind of like Santa Claus, so I generally just wink. Mostly at women.
Was that you I saw at Back Bay Station in Boston on Monday? I swear I saw this guy that looked just like Santa
