I don't think rural people believe government is bad. The government just doesn't need to tell people how to live and how they are there to help us. If you've noticed lately all government handouts are going bust or making people flat out lazy.

Like President Obama trying to be one of the "ordinary people" he isn't, and probably never has been.

1.ignorance is the primary reason
2. More machines do people's work as the primary jobs out their are agricultural etc, less people needed, less jobs, complain about the government.
3. More jobs in the city, which they do not live in

Haven't you seen the county maps from the past two elections? Rural areas tend to vote Republican overall. That's a basic fact of American politics.

So I'm assuming these all might "self sufficient" people in rural areas won't be collecting Social Security, Social Security disability, Medicare, Medicaid, WIC, go to public schools, benefit from farming/agricultural subsidies, receive unemployment insurance, etc. Because for the 3 years I lived in a rural area I saw a lot of use of all of those. The only difference between a poor rural area and a poor urban area is that those in the rural area will rail against "socialism" as they collect government benefits.

I would direct one to consider this snippet:
Quote:
We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission.
- - - Ayn Rand
When government requires permission (license) to do something that our ancestors did without needing permission, we have witnessed the eradication of a right.

What changed our rights into government privileges?
When did we lose the right to :
[] Run a business
[] Engage in any occupation
[] Trade in medicine / medical care
[] Marry
[] Own a dog
[] Build a house
[] Transmit radio waves
[] Travel by automobile
... and so on...

Next time you put onions on your tofu burger, think about how they are planted. In this area, it is done by most farmers on a two-seated transplanter, with one person on each side. bending sideways and placing them in opposite rows, for 4 hours straight. Ditto garlic. Gives us uneducated ruralists an unbelieveable ab workout.

It would seem to me there are plenty of activist groups in urban areas. Just this past weekend there was the "Occupy Wallstreet" group. I don't see SEIU protesting in rural America. Michael Bloomberg wasn't warning of riots in rural areas.

The answer to the question posed by the OP should be obvious. Take a look at any national election map that is broken down by county, borough, or parish. You will find that the most rural counties are more conservative because they are more self-reliant than urban dwellers or suburbanites.

Cities require far more government than rural areas. Primarily because of population density. Which is why the bigger the city, the more liberal it will be. For them, government becomes a religion. They cannot get enough of it, and those who live in rural areas are tired of paying for ever-increasing government services that only those living in urban areas use. That is bound to foster anti-government sentiment.

Having lived in rural America and have family that still does.. It boils down to the fact they don't want government telling them what to do, what to watch on tv, how to wipe their noses. People in rural areas are very self sufficient and tend to rely on what they can afford vs what the government can give them. I don't know any of them that are on any government assistance either. They served in the millitary are hard working and have their houses paid off. They feel they have everything they need and don't need to "keep up with the joneses".

To say that rural people are ignorant is like the pot calling the kettle black. Is it ignorant to not have thousands in debt, is it ignorant to know you can take care of yourself without govt assistance, is it ignorant to know how to read and write and to add? Education is valued (maybe not graduate education, but the necessary tools to survive are)

You obviously haven't spent much time in America's urban 'hoods.

Not too many of the scholarly types there either. Plus you can throw in a dash of savage, violent behavior.

In their minds the gov't cant do enough for them
