The US manufacturing industry has an identity crisis, as we are no longer a competitive manufacturing center and our consumption level for these products has reached a mature stage, whereas emerging markets are growing faster, so it makes sense to manufacture those products closer to the target markets... we need to bite the bullet and let industries manufacture elsewhere if they think they can me more efficient...

one of our problems is having a competitive currency, already the Chinese reeevaluation of their currency is helping to restart the maquilas in mexico (which were also losing jobs to China)

the future of the US manufacturing is to find advanced niches were we have a competitive advantage and where we can offer high value products...

some ideas..
-produce our own energy and stop importing from opec (if brazil and colombia can implement this, so can we)
-manufacture advanced products that run off of renewable energy and we can export these as well
-continue our technology advantage through innovation - even if lower level IT jobs are being outsourced, just let them go...
-healthcare - we need to eliminate healthcare & insurance inefficiencies, and develop innovative medical care products
-robotics - we excel at making machines that do the work for us (and lay off more people)

of course, we don't have the skills for any of this so we'll have to import labor from other countries, and we will suffer massive unemployment at home, but it beats subsidizing inefficiencies through tax payer money... right now we are just treading water as we try to reinvent ourselves, sorry...

Globalization is also why stocks have plummeted so badly today.

lol....good joke.
Plenty of people who got into IT lost their jobs due to offshoring and are not all doing OK. Not sure about finance.

The greedy CEO's, owners and shareholders in combination of past government policies has led to most jobs leaving the country.

Have you ever considered that buying cheap merchandise at Target and Walmart may cost you your job, health insurance and your children's education savings? How does it sound now? Still a good deal?

Maybe I meant along the lines of programmers. Those got offshored because they're not as hands-on as say, a network technician. Help desk calls can be offshored too.

HP, a computer giant with IT solutions for every type of business, has its own IT outsourced to India. The service department (located in India) will also coordinate picking up your computer (in Ca) for repair.
