I'm going to be more clear this time I'm just doing ones where the cover has, I think, eclipsed the original without attempting a judgment on whether it "blows it away." This is because Peggy Lee, looking it up, very much admired Lil Green as a musician and apparently covered it due to that. Also I'm including a later cover because I want to (This song had an earlier version, with a different singer I guess, but the lyrics and title were changed so I'm going with Lil Green)

Of course there's also the famous Jessica Rabbit rendition.

John ALWAYS has a better voice along with the guitar tone. Once he borrows your song........who are YOU???

Sorry if this is necroposting or anything, but I just learned this was a cover and decided to compare.

YouTube - ‪Jackie DeShannon - "Bette Davis Eyes"‬‏ - Original.

YouTube - ‪Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes‬‏ - More famous cover.

There's a pretty strong difference.

The two versions are worlds apart, indeed. What I find strikingly similar are the two ladies' appearances. And of course Kim's cover was a huge hit.

Other than "Watchtower" and perhaps Cream's "Crossroads", I feel that most remakes are an embarrassment. Same with movies.

"At Last" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film Orchestra Wives, starring George Montgomery and Ann Rutherford. It was performed in the film and on record by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, with vocals by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday. In 1960, it was covered by blues singer Etta James in an arrangement that improvised on Warren's melody. James' version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

One I did on Anything Goes. I'm not sure I agree it "blows it away", but it certainly overshadowed it.

‪KAI WINDING - TIME IS ON MY SIDE- VERSION ORIGINAL-1963‬‏ - YouTube - Original version.

‪Time is on my side - The Rolling Stones‬‏ - YouTube - Rolling Stones more famous version.

I also mentioned "The Greatest Love of All" which is a George Benson song done for a Muhammad Ali biopic. I find some of the lyrics a bit annoying, but the song is well known and widely thought of as Whitney Houston's. So I guess this sort of is a "covering jazz musicians in pop or rock and making the song more famous" theme.

Unfortunately Jerry Ragovoy the gentleman that wrote "Time Is On My Side" past away on July 13.

One cover I like is Link Wray “Ain’t That Lovin’ You Baby”, doesn’t really blow away Jimmy Reed’s, just a different take on the song.

The Everly Brothers version I feel is good too, with the crash opening.
Unlike The Everly Brothers cover of Lucille.
