Yes, we definitely want to know if there are cases where people thought they were safe, but got sick anyway. And how sick did they get? So far they're saying that breakthrough infections are mild, but I think there have been so few of them that it's hard to be sure of that.

Personally, I'm feeling pretty safe. It's a big change from a few months ago!

There have been people who still got covid even though they were fully vaccinated. The numbers are small but it's happened.

Nothing is perfect. As vaccines go, the COVID vaccines are really good. The rates of infection and transmission are SIGNIFICANTLY reduced, and, more importantly, so is the severity of any illness.

The lowering of the overall transmission rate is the big deal. It won’t go away completely but we won’t have big surges if we get to 70%+ vaccinated. There’s too much foreign travel for it to go away completely.

The clinical trials showed ~ 95% effectiveness in preventing symptomatic infection for the Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines, so that's consistent with the trials. They were even better at preventing hospitalization and death - nearly 100% effective, in fact I don't think anyone receiving these vaccines in their clinical trials was hospitalized or died from Covid-19 infection. As new variants keep evolving, these vaccines will become less effective, and we will need updated vaccines to track the viral evolution - as is done with flu vaccines.

According to the NY Times vaccination tracker, 54.3% in Mass are fully vaccinated, and 66.8% have received at least one dose. In fact, New England is doing quite well as a region - ahead of the rest of the nation.

Looking at this week’s data, Springfield and New Bedford are at 43% with at least one jab. A more concerted effort needs to be made in those places. My town is a pathetic 51% with one jab. I guess not surprising for a socioeconomically mixed town. The 30-49 age bracket is only 51% with one jab and anyone younger is far lower.

And we'd still be living with polio today had such attitudes been prevalent in the 1950s.

My great aunt had polio that she had caught as a child. I remember one of her legs and feet was significantly smaller/shorter than the other. She could walk herself but had a limp. It seemed pretty debilitating. I'll take covid over any polio any day.

Yes, there's definitely still work to do on education, outreach, and promotions, and the full approvals, once obtained, should help as well. The resistance some people have is maddening and isn't rational, but we are continuing to advance so I am still hopeful. And certainly when one looks around the world, almost all nations are worse off with vaccination than we are, whether the primary issue is vaccine availability or ignorance in their populace.
