It might take a little doing, and I don't have the measurements, but I'd vote to stick a new baseball park in there. That's assuming there's enough room, of course, but I'd guess it's about 600' from the corner to the tree line, and that should be enough to play with. Put 375' - 400' down each side line, and you're good to go! Play ball!
A park would be close to downtown (maybe even walkable) so those businesses would greatly benefit from a pre and post-game crowd. It's on the city bus route, so locals would not need to drive. The Spring Street Landing and bike trails are on other side, so overflow parking for some folks and bikeable/walkable access for others. Put home plate at the corner of Riverside and Hwy 23, facing the river and railroad tracks, and build some parking at the southern end. Should make for a very attractive venue - easily seen from I-75 and easily accessed off I-75 via I-16.
You'll lose a couple of filling stations and the Burger King and Pizza Hut, but the latter can probably be accommodated by giving them exclusive rights to sell their products at the stadium.
I think it's a good idea and in keeping with the mayor's recent thoughts regarding a stadium.
The Brick will work well there. They know college students and alumni....it will be a hit. On a similar note, I am thoroughly impressed with the scale of these lofts. It is very nice and will invigorate that entire surrounding area.
I need to make back down to Macon soon to see all of the progress going on.
