A new store coming to downtown Macon may suit some people.
Doug White plans to open LDW Haberdashery at 329 Cotton Ave., near Amanda’s Cakery.
The store will offer custom tailored men’s suits and shirts as well as some off-the-rack items, White said. It also will carry shoes, ties and other accessories.
“We could definitely see the growth downtown and we saw a need for businessman’s attire downtown, especially with downtown being the business district,” he said. “Nobody else is doing what we’re doing, which is what I call nice, conservative, permanent fashion.”
The shop would fill a void left after Bowen Brothers closed in January 2014, he said.
White and his father have been in the menswear business about nine years -- his father is a necktie designer -- and have operated LDS Designer Fashions at 3706 Mercer University Drive the past six years.
The downtown store is expected to have a soft opening in about two weeks with an official opening by mid-September. It is expected to be open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Atlanta-based Aderhold Properties, which bought the properties on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at Pine Street two years ago, has invested more than $1.5 million in the renovations, according to an email from President Derek Aynsley. The work was done during the past six months.
Aynsley said the renovations include:
Broadway Lofts: Vacant office space, a fitness center and laundry on the first floor were converted into six new loft-style apartments. The fitness center and laundry were relocated with new equipment.
Cherokee Lofts: The seven units were remodeled with new kitchens and bathrooms with hardwood or stained concrete floors, new appliances and granite countertops. The roof of the building next door was removed and converted into private patios, with access from the lofts by French doors.
A former auto lube shop that more recently was a detail shop was reconstructed to create six private, secure parking garages.
An open house for the properties which began 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday will continue 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
Aderhold Properties bought these properties in 2013 along with Katherine Court and the Terrace Apartments on Mulberry Street from McCarty Property Group, which had redeveloped the properties.
It's little things like this that can go a long way toward improving downtown Macon..

The 2015 Leadership Macon class has decided to shed some light on the often dark, empty spaces. Leadership Macon is a program sponsored by the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, and ever year, the class is charged with coming up with a project that will have a lasting impact on the community. This year's class will be revitalizing a two-block stretch of Second Street Lane from Mulberry to Poplar Street.
"Our class just had a vision of capturing the momentum that downtown is really receiving right now," says Leadership Macon member Erin Keller. "Just create a sense of place for people to feel like they belong here and they don't have to worry when they walk back to their cars."
For the annual Make a Difference Day, 13WMAZ has teamed up with the group. It's a time when people across the country are encouraged to do something to help others. On Saturday, the Leadership Macon and WMAZ crews will be painting, cleaning, and planting in the area, which will help set the stage for more upgrades.
Strings of lights have already been installed in the area. The class has and continues to raise money to add benches and plant boxes along the alley, as well as games like hopscotch and four square painted on the ground.
Keller says on the stretch between Cherry and Mulberry Streets, "we're partnering with The Rookery to add large wooden frames, and then within it, paint chalkboard paint to create a sense of activity."
