and there was no 310.

Isn't State 8 something used in England? Are you referring to postal zones before zip, like Los Angeles 16, I think used prior to 1963?

No Charles. When I was a kid in the Valley if your phone started with 788 it was called st8 or State8 instead. I was wrong about the area code thing. I don't remember if the area code was 818 in the sixties?

OK, now I know. I grew up in Canoga Park. Our phone number was 213 DI7-xxxx or 213 347-xxxx, later it became 818 347 xxxx

Looks like you grew up in Sherman Oaks

Our exchange in Ontario was "Yukon" for 98x-xxxx. I think those were gone in the late 60s as I don't recall one for our 49x-xxxx numbers in South OC.

You know you're a true Southern Californian when members of your immediate family actually knew the McDonald brothers before Ray Kroc did.
