This does not bode well for the Stratosphere either. Talk about being stranded!

Extend the monorail to the Stratosphere would help?

About as much as it helped Sahara.

It was time. The Sahara was a dump and the room inventory needs to come off of the market so stronger properties can carry on. There are plenty of other lower end properties to pick up the customers. Vegas has to consolidate before it can grow, otherwise everyone will go down together.

Wouldn't the property have to pay to extend the monorail? How long will the monorail continue to run. Ridership seems pretty low.

The Sahara had its place back in the day. The mid-west bosses where never afraid to show their faces there and had the best jazz show in town. Once the business started going to the South end of the strip. The place was doomed and the owner Lowden knew it and never put another nickel in renovation or upkeep until he sold the place to Bennett. The closing is long overdue. I cannot say I will miss the place since it was long passed it gory days before I was old enough to enjoy it.

Back in the day, yes.

Now, not so much.

But if you've never been there, I think you might want to walk through it just once before it closes just for the history of the place. There aren't many of the old Vegas places left. Dunes, Sands, Desert Inn, Stardust, Aladdin and more are all gone now. I was too young for the Rat Pack era, but I did start coming to Vegas in the 1970s and I'm glad that I had a chance to experience its history before most of it was imploded. Years or decades from now, you'll be able to say that you remember Vegas from back in the day when hotels like Sahara were still around.

Yep. I have to admit that, the older I get, the more nostalgic I get. I'm glad I had the opportunity to visit many of the original casinos, before they were torn down. I really enjoy seeing pictures of the "old" strip and downtown areas. And because the skyline of Las Vegas changes so frequently, I also enjoy taking a lot of pictures while I'm there.

Here's the LV Sun article from 1952 describing the brand-new Sahara Hotel:

Beautiful Sahara is Jewel out of fairyland - Las Vegas Sun

And here's a column from today's LV Sun that contains some interesting (and funny) anecdotes about the Sahara in its heyday:

At the end, 59-year-old Sahara isn't a hint of what it once was - The Kats Report - Las Vegas Sun
