We have had some discussion on this thread of the old United Supers grocery stores supplied by the Fleming Company in North Kansas City. There were several in Independence and I once posted a list from 1958.

Here is a building in the 2400 block of north Liberty. It was not on my list but I believe it was also a United Super at one point. The name escapes me, though.

In 1988 it was the Kentucky Hills Thriftway. I don't recall any earlier names for it. Perhaps Dallas could poke in Polk's.

Kentucky Hills. There is a name I had forgotten for that part of town.

A 1974 Kansas City Star advertisement for Thriftway stores has it as Kentucky Hills Thriftway, also.

There was a Triple M Food Corporation incorporated at the 2408 N Liberty address on 7/21/66, so the United Super would be before that date--if I am remembering correctly.

Switching gears again.... Came across this business map of the square from 2011. However it still appears fairly current.

To paraphrase Dinah Washington

What a difference a half century makes . . .fifty-four little annuals

Too bad you don't have a 1950, 60 or 70 version!

At Osage and Maple, northeast corner, I see from Google Earth that a "Polly's Pop coming soon" sign was replaced by a Mexican restaurant "coming soon" sign. OOPs. The "Polly's Pop coming soon" sign is still there, a couple doors further west from the Mexican restaurant sign.

That Google Earth image is April 2013 so maybe the Mexican restaurant is now in or, if not, that corner must be a hex on many wanna be businesses.

I wonder how a Chinese restaurant would fit in on the square.

If this is the one by Kentucky Hills, it was a Thriftway. I tried handling a second job there doing night stocking in 1970 or 1971. I did not last too long. Too many hours of working.
