Rock Creek or near there? (According to 1880 history of Jackson Co.)

Congratulations! You are correct.

Dare I post another trivia question?

Just the name, Rock Creek, would seem to indicate a lot of rock.

At the time of the original post on the forum of the "location" of Rock Creek as to where the stone came from, I used Google Maps and traced along Rock Creek but could not find evidence of an abandoned quarry or evidence of a lot of rock. (Maybe they took it all)

Anyone have any ideas where on Rock Creek they might have mined two foot thick slabs of stone?

The area around Hill Park has a lot of exposed rock, both as the creek bed and as bluffs.

There were quarries opened east of Kansas City in 1865 and in 1869 with no specific location but this would be a few years after the Jail was built.

I came across this information concerning East Independence, Mo:

According to an MA Thesis out of the University of Missouri in 1937, it was a platted town that was never developed to any extent. However, the author has the location as three miles south of Independence.

From a Jackson County Historical Society Journal article the stones used in the 1859 Jackson County Jail were 24 to 28 inches wide, 1.5 feet tall, and 6 feet long. The stone blocks were held together with 4 inch long iron rods.

Cost of the entire jail was $12,500.

Rock Creek is eight miles long with a drainage area of 9.5 square miles according to two sources.

The Jackson County Fairgrounds were once on Rock Creek where Rock Creek school is today.

A little research shows it merged with Christ UMC, must be the reason it was torn down. Christ UMC is currently at Phelps Rd and 39th (just n. of I-70, just e. of Noland)
I was a member of Watson Memorial and later Christ United Methodist. I was a youngun' when I first attended there and our family went virtually every Sunday. It was in that church and its Boy Scout Troop 228 that I became and Eagle Scout and became a warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

In December of 1963, I enlisted in the Army and on July 3, 1964, I sailed from the Brooklyn Naval Yards to Bremerhaven, Germany. When I left to go to Germany, there was no widening of Noland, no I-70 through Independence, and if there was a Christ United Methodist, I was unaware of it.

When I returned in late May 1966, I-70 was there, Watson was no longer a Methodist Church, and my parents went to Christ UMC. I returned to that church at that time. Interestingly, when I returned in December 1966, I was 21 years old. My wife-to-be went to the same church. She has just had a birthday 4 days before my discharge, and she had just turned 15. I did not meet her until July of 1968, when she was the ripe old age of 16 and I had turned 23 just two months before.

In May 1967, I flew to Frankfurt, Germany. After arriving, I soon discovered that most everyone already there had come over by ship. I was advised that the Army had stopped sending folks over by ship. And, was I glad of that!
