Hey, I knew where that was at. You couldn't fool me.

It was in Jackson County.

Okay, where is it at and where is the intersection at post 2183?

Once I go east of Noland, I'm out of my element (unless it's along I-70!)

Now look at us, almost 300 pages/3,000 posts. I wonder what the other "regulars" on the KC Forum think when they see this thread almost always at the top lol. Like, WTH are those people talking about.

It's been quite awhile since Sally or Son has posted. Prayers up always for her, Sally come back you are very missed.

To the rest of you, thanks for helping me relive lots of long-buried memories and learning alot of new things for the place that I can't really claim as my "hometown" but was within its city limits (barely I think at the time) when I first came kicking and screaming and creating havoc into the world. Hope to see some of you when I hopefully come back for a reunion late this Summer.

MRG Dallas
As near as I can recall, I was searching for information on the Courthouse Exchange restaurant in May 2012 and accidentally came upon this web site. That particular restaurant, which is now in the basement of the old JC Penny's building claims to have started business in 1899.

I did not recall a Courthouse Exchange restaurant when I was living in Independence so I contacted the owner or manager to find out where this mysterious place was located in the 1950s. She reminded me that it was somewhere on the south side of Maple, east of and near the alley between Liberty and Osage. I then recalled the place and remember walking past it many times smelling hamburgers and beer while on my way to the old Velvet Freeze location on the same side of Maple, now a big parking lot.

But as a youngster I never paid any attention to the name. Since May 2012, I have ate at that establishment at least four times and have thoroughly enjoyed the historical theme of the entire dining experience. Even the menu is historically oriented.

"Long Ago on Independence Square" is the top viewed thread on the KC website. As of today, it has 62,251 views. Out of around 2,450 threads on the KC website that is number one.

"Bad Neighborhoods in Saint Joseph" comes in at a weak number two with 39,569 views.

Number three "Sales Tax on Car Purchase" comes in at 35,199.

"Opinions on Independence, MO" comes in 14th with 20,455 views.

I've never lived in Independence and have no affiliation. Just moved from Smithville MO to Raleigh NC, and even I am glued to this thread!

Just a thought: we're all very much enjoying the old pictures posted on this site. since digital pictures are so cheap, maybe some of you Independence locals ought to go out and get lots of pictures of Independence as it is today? In 30 years or so, people will think the "old days" were amazing!

Don't know why. . . . but I love this thread!

I frequently heard of Smithville, Mo. in the fifties but did not know where it was at. Just now looked it up. 8,500 souls 29 nine miles northeast of Independence Square on US 169 in Clay and Platte counties.

I might add that "Long Ago on Independence Square" as of today has 2,968 posts.

This is ten times plus more than the next most popular thread, "What is with KU Not Wanting to Play MU," which has 234 posts.
