Way back in the olden days...(when modems still made warbly sounds, and we had to smash our own hydrogen and oxygen atoms together to make water, etc)...there WAS more distinction between a "journalist" and an "editorial contributor" in most news sources. Granted there were cases of "yellow journalism" over the years, and certainly city papers have very unabashed political leanings. However, an "article" is separated from an "editorial" or "opinion piece" with a certain criteria set by the news editorial management. How much those two can become conflated is another issue.

But basically here in this thread, ANY link to an editorial or opinion piece is going to be held to a much higher standard and is much more likely to be deleted. That's just the way it's going to be. So if you don't want to have your "news" post deleted, please follow these guidelines and try to stick to posting actual news stories headlines/links.

Petitioners are requesting a new review of the impact of the Rock Creek Mine on bull trout and grizzly populations, something that the 2006 review apparently didn't address.

Petition calls for fresh look at Rock Creek Mine impacts - Bonner County Daily Bee: Local News

For those who aren't familiar with the controversy: The Rock Creek Mine is a proposed mining operation in the Eastern Cabinets, a proposed Wilderness Area along the Clark Fork River just east of the ID/MT border. Since the CF River flows west, the impact stretches into North Idaho.

Clark Fork news! Sort of:

Hikers find suspected human remains - Bonner County Daily Bee: Local News

Quote:
...Lakewold said the bones could be 30 years old or perhaps significantly older than that.
Steve Beal found the bones on March 7 while hiking on the lake bed with his sons, Sage, 12, and Sam, 8. Beal said they were exploring the lake bed because the deep winter drawdown has exposed vast sections of it.
The lake was drawn down to a deeper winter pool to facilitate work to restore the Clark Fork Delta.
The trio started out at Denton Slough and began making their way to the Clark Fork Driftyard when they came across the bones.
“All the molars were in the jaw and the rest of the teeth were all laying close by,” said Beal.
...
Now Sammy and Sage (not our Sage!) will have a story to tell in school!

and, specifically, into Lake Pend Oreille, hence the concerns here in Bonner County.

(No criticism, Clark. Just wanted to point that out in case some readers aren't familiar with our geography. )

Well, I'm glad someone is benefiting from the pain I experience every time I'm in the grocery store.

Don't worry; the Idaho legislature is here to help you. They're trying to eliminate taxes on groceries. So, you'll save 6% on however much you spend, offset by the $100 or so dollars you got from the grocery tax credit.

Ever think of moving to a nice solid blue state like CA or NY, or if interested, I can give you some great locations in Turkey, Laos, Cambodia, Senegal, just for few great places that love liberals. Just asking; nothing personal.

Okay, maybe everybody can agree on this being good news?

County: Give area wilderness designation - Bonner County Daily Bee: Local News

Quote:
SANDPOINT — Bonner County commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday calling on Congress to designate the Idaho portion of the Scotchman Peaks area as wilderness.
The resolution states that the Scotchman Peaks area provides outstanding vistas and recreation opportunities for residents and viewers. It also contributes to the economic vitality of the region and provides habitat for a diverse array of native flora and fauna, the resolution said.

The resolution is striking because it was adopted by a conservative commission which generally opposes wilderness designation.
“The message we’re trying to send is Scotchman Peaks is the exception to the rule,” commission Chairman Cary Kelly said.
...
The Friends of Scotchmans Peaks maintain several hiking trails, and as the article states, there are no ATV trails that would be affected by the decision. The area is remote and accessible at the same time. And it is our view to the northeast!

If this designation is granted, it will be interesting to see what Montana decides, since 2/3 of the area is in MT.
