I have severe back pain and went to the medical center ER in Plano. They gave me shots in my buttock area but was only relieved some pain for only a couple of hours. My dr. Referred me to a back specialist but they have no openings till Friday.meanwhile I'm in severe pain and the pain Meds prescribed by emergency room are not helping much. Can someone tell me what I can do? I really need a cortisone shot but Friday is a long long time for me. I can't stand more then 1 minute before the nerve shoots down my leg. If anyone knows what I can do please let me know.

I'm an ER physician and I do not do cortisone shots to the back (facet shots). Some may do if they have training in sports medicine fellowship, but that's not common.

My suggestion is to wait until you see your specialist. You don not want complications from this procedure.

If you go to the ER, the common thing they'll do would be to hit you with some IM nsaids and maybe 10 doses of narcs + a muscle relaxant like methocarbamol or valium.

You may be able to get oral steroids which may take the edge off- an ER doc or family practice doc can do that. Good luck.

Neither have I...

But if he's had success with facet injections it's not a massive leap to think a dose pack might help him. So likely this will buy him time until he can get to an appropriate specialist.

I have. The back guys do it all the time. Actually usually a medrol dose pack.

My issue with this op is using the ED as an outpatient clinic.
