Um, this is interesting... From Boston. Triple Low formed last night? Up to 4.5" fell in Rhode Island and Coastal MA

AT 4 AM HEAVY SNOW BAND THAT IMPACTED RI AND EASTERN MA LAST
EVENING HAS MOVED WELL OFFSHORE...AFTER DEPOSITING 2-4 INCHES OF
SNOW ACROSS THIS AREA WITH 4.6 INCHES HERE AT THE WX OFFICE! THIS
... WAS QUITE AN INTERESTING EVENT AS A TRIPLE LOW DEVELOPED OVER THE
AREA IN RESPONSE TO STRONG FRONTAL CONVERGENCE. THIS LOW LEVEL
CIRCULATION WAS CAPTURED BY OUR RADAR AROUND 05Z-06Z FROM
NARRAGANSETT BAY TO BUZZARDS BAY AND INTO CAPE COD BAY. IN FACT AS
THE CIRCULATION TRACKED ACROSS MA BAY PVC REPORTED A SE WIND G44
KT AT 0555Z! QUITE THE INFLOW! THIS TRIPLE POINT/MESO LOW
DEVELOPED ABOUT 150 MILES FARTHER SOUTH THAN MODEL GUID PROJECTED.
THUS MORE SNOWFALL THAN PREVIOUS FORECAST.

AS THE TRIPLE POINT LOW INTENSIFIES OVER ME TODAY NW PRES GRADIENT
WILL INCREASE AND SUPPORT NW WINDS GUSTING TO 20-30 MPH ACROSS THE
AREA. MODEST COLD AIR ADVECTION ON THE BACKSIDE OF THIS LOW WITH
850 TEMPS LOWERING TO ABOUT -12C AND 925 MB DOWN TO -10C OVER
SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.

Don't want to get too much off topic, but looking ahead to the last part of Jan and early Feb, the GFS is showing the NAO going sharply negative (540 line making it to Greenland!) yet it seems like we are suppose to have normal or above normal temps for most of that period....

What gives??

What makes that more interesting is that I think wast of New Haven and south of Danbury the snow was pretty much a dud (didn't see any on the ground driving from southern Westchester to coastal part of Norwalk this morning.....Hutch to 287 to 95 to exit 13).

Mountains tore apart the clipper. Maybe I jinxed it by saying I was watching it come over them. The snow to East of us came from the coastal Lows that formed past SouthWest CT

Warnings might NOT be issued. Here's their criteria to issue a warning. Notice Litchfield needs to have at least 7 inches in 12hr period to issue a Winter Storm Warning.

So the Watches may be all they issue.

Weather Channel is starting to suggest that it may be a "fast mover" and that more rain may mix in on the coast, they're only suggesting 2-4" most areas with occasional 5-6" amounts to the north.

Whereas Accuweather is "hyping it up". NWS seems to be siding more with Accuweather, saying 4-7" everywhere.

One thing that I think favors snow a little this time at least to begin is that it's actually been getting colder as the day wears on. Was in the 30s most areas at 6am this morning and even NYC is down to the low-mid 20s now.

Interesting here in NC 2 -3 inches does the trick. Thinking about it 3 inches last year caused schools to close for a week.

I know models have come in more juiced up today and even keeps NYC at all snow with half foot (subtract 2 inches for melt) But NWS Boston surprised me with these totals for Southern Hartford, Tolland, and Windham Counties.
