FYI - Roofs should be able to hold up to 4 feet. It depends on many circumstances ie: pitch of roof, joists, plywood, age, ect..

Check your local codes and see what the load bearing is for roofs in the area.

Its a disaster project to do but if we're getting a foot next week I really think it should be on our minds to get it cleared a.s.a.p..

I have over 2 feet now on my roof now. Lets hope for sun so it can evaporate a lot of it.

I don't know why I95 was like it was, but the highways around here at least were just fine. Again, this is not Tahoe with 4-6 feet of snow in the mountains making it "unpassable". It's a snow storm, in New England. We are 10 inches above our norm. Whoopie.

As for the bull comment, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm not being the dramatic person here, just a realist. It's snow, they plow, we shovel, it's gone, it's cold. Rinse and repeat for another month.

So that's two different directions saying the same thing.
Not all of us are in the Granby or Hartford area. The roads here in Norwalk were bad considering the trucks were out most of the night.

I think this storm has not only tested the patience of people but the strength of D.O.T... My heart goes out to them. Do you have any idea how tough it is. You may think they are just sitting there driving but there's so much mental strength and awareness you need.

Last time we had 2 feet it was a breeze but This storm has towns on the edge..

They really need to consider taking the time and taking the snow to a park or somewhere. Forget budget this year, forget pushing the snow to the edges. No holds bar with mother nature.

They have 7 days. I fear what will happen if we get another foot next week.

I know from people I work with that it was worse to the south and east. Either way it was not a great storm and some parts of the state got hit worse than others. Jay
Exactly. Thanks for pointing out that Glastonbury didn't get much over a foot. New Haven and Fairfield County were an absolute mess, but I wouldn't expect folks in the Hartford area (say, Manchester) to understand our difficulty down here.

If your gutters are iced over, get the snow off your roof. As soon as this starts to thaw, people are going to have major problems.

I highly recommend Leaf Guard gutters. I've had them on my last two homes and they do not fill with debris and snow. They sometimes form icicles but they are on the outside edge of the top cover. They cost about 50% more than traditional gutters but are highly worth it IMHO.

If the snow starts to slide it slides right over the top cover and doesn't get stuck like a traditional gutter.

Norwalk has performed pitifully this season. They NEED to get the snow off the streets. I had a friend come over with a back hoe to clear the end of my street. I'm the last house on a dead end and the snowmound was even with my driveway. At least our city's incompetence meant they STILL havent been down my street even once so my drive was not blocked.
Getting out onto Gregory Blvd from my street is Russian rulet though. Theres a 10 foot pile on the left corner which is a blind corner on the best of days. I understand they didn't budget for this, but they sure should have. You only need to budget for a winter like this once & leave the money alone until it happens. Its nice we have cool new lights, tables & islands in the parking lot at the beach, but if we had no money left to provide for an above average winter we didn't need that stuff.
I'm no fargin rocket scientist, but if I ran my life the way politicians run cities, states & the nation in general I'd be in the poor house real fast.

Anyway, I just got in from snowblowing. Threw another belt this morning but got it up & running in a couple hours. A few more people to get out tomorrow & then I'm going back into roof shoveling mode.

After all is said & done I really do love this stuph!

It doesn't matter if you have no gutters at all. Ice dams are a real danger & they happen with or without gutters. The ONLY reason any house under a 7 pitch doesn't have ice dam problems right now is because of Weather watch or a similar ice dam protective underlayment applied under the shingles along the eves. Has nothing to do with guters at all. It has to do with a relatively warm roof over your heated space & a cold roof along the eves where the water can refreeze & start impeding flow. Shingles only work as long as the water can flow downwards. By the time it gets to a gutter its below the shingles.

That said I like the waterfall gutter guards which are I think very similar to leaf guard gutters except they snap onto standard gutters & under the shingles. Generally I despise anything that prevents easy cleaning of gutters & refuse to instal gutter guards. But the waterfall gutter guards have proven themselves to function as advertized. I still refuse to clean them after installing but I'll put them in for people if they insist.

JMO but eventually ANY gutter will need to be cleaned so to me easy acess trumps the ability to ignore routine maintainance for a couple years. Might take ten years but some day somebody will need to have acess to those gutters.
