That being said, Oakland does look real ghetto in areas, the key words being in areas. Oakland as a whole is not a ghetto city... for that refer to Richmond.

While we're still talking about Oakland, tho, here's a couple pics of east oakland I took:

^*gasp* white people who live in east oakland!

All of these pictures are on the same street (14th ave). Oakland has a lot of diverse residential architecture, and a lot that people don't typically associate with California.
LOL Oakland is dangerous from what I hear I went to Oakland b4 it seems like it get krazy ..

I'm not saying that Oakland can't be dangerous... it can. Matter of fact, it can be extremely dangerous. However, like most major cities it depends where you are and more than that what you're doing. If you're doing something you shouldn't be doing in a high crime area in Oakland, you increase your chances of becoming a statistic tenfold. If you mind your own business in a high crime area and don't look like a target (ie not being by yourself and not acting like a punk/antisocial) your chances go down dramatically. If you don't go into high crime areas, there's little to no chance of you becoming a statistic. There's a lot of little to no crime areas in Oakland, and if you fall into the 2nd category then you likely won't become a statistic in any part of Oakland. Of course there's the chance you could be caught in the crossfire in a high crime area or you could be the victim of a random act of violence, but that's much more likely to occur in Frisco than in Oakland. Violence in Oakland is not random... its the opposite.

^Originally from the south bay but moved up to Oakland about a year and a half ago. Been a Baydestrian my whole life... lol

Don't get me wrong, though, there are parts of Oakland that are no bull****. Pretty much anywhere off of International Blvd is not safe after dark and anywhere past 60th ave off of international blvd is not safe at any point. However, even on International they've cleaned up parts of it... the Fruitvale BART area of International is beginning to thrive and Chinatown looks nice too.

Here's some pics I took of Chinatown/Funktown...

Saint Louis? Not a bad city? Yeah right, it has one of the highest murder rates in America.

Those Oakland pictures aren't bad at all though. If thats a ghetto area, than that is one of the cleanest looking hoods I've ever seen.

Northeast. United. States. (Philly, Camden, New York, etc.) They're older and more urbanized, therefore they look a lot worse.

a) The city of Oakland cleaned up (as in cleaned) a lot of International Blvd because back when it used to be called E. 14th st it was dirty as ****. All you have to do is go to any main street that isn't E. 14th in that same area to see grime...

b) its currently the nicest part of East Oakland (chinatown). Still not safe at night (and its right next to one of the worse off ones, the Murder Dubbs) but its fine for the most part in the daytime if you stay on the main streets.

c) like I said, if you go a couple blocks off of international its stops being clean. And being clean doesn't make it any less dangerous.

d) California weather doesn't exactly speed up the process of making the housing look as old as it does (100+ years old in some cases).

e) Oakland isn't made out of brick like most of the east caost (luckily for us). Brick ages a lot faster.

The oldest area of Oakland is West Oakland, which is why it looks the worst, closely tailed by Deep East Oakland.

And if you want to see grime in Chinatown, you can find it. I just happened to not try to find it... lol. Being somewhere grimy in Oakland and you have no reason to be there = stupidity.

And if you go past 35th ave, its all grime. Here's some pics I took of the Foothill and High st. area... the pics are too big to post so I'll post the links.

Oakland can be as (or in most cases more) hood as anywhere else in the country... it doesn't have to try. lol. Oakland as a whole has been on an upswing though... I'm hoping it stays on the upswing.
