Another Texas city, Houston started off being up by a lot but now is down by quite a bit. Philly and DC fluctuated from being down, then up, and then down again.

I realized yesterday that Philly's record year, last year, was a rate of 35/100,000 people. DC did not have a record year, and their rate was 32.7/100,000. It's crazy how Philly's reputation is so much worse considering this.

The first thing that comes to mind in DC is still NW and the "Washington" portrayed in media. The first image that comes to mind for Philly is Kensington.

In my opinion assuming that those numbers are correct, both numbers are really bad and both cities deserve a bad reputation.

Fair enough. I think both have plenty of safe areas, but also some really bad ones. They are still nowhere near the level of somewhere like Baltimore, that has about 58 homicides per 100,000. Philly isn't even top 10 in PA for homicide rate. Anyway, I won't derail the thread. Was just noticing.

Its still bad in SE DC. 64 so far with 85k population. Rate 75 comparable to Gary or North St Louis(96) pop. 119k

Baltimore’s homicide rate is ~52/100k right now but it’s non-fatal shooting rate is within a stone throw of Philly’s. Both ironically have a lower non-fatal shooting rate than Chicago despite Chicago having a lower homicide rate than both.
I’d have to do the math again
1:3 people who are shot are killed in Baltimore
1:5 people who are shot are killed in Philly
1:6 people who are shot are killed in Chicago
It’s a lot more complex than A + B = C
