Well one thing that several people have said is they feel Publix has a better bakery and deli. But even if you disagree with that, I think the fact that "there isn't anything better about Publix" is exactly what makes them so successful. Even if you don't think they're #1 in any particular aspect, they're probably #2 in almost all of them - their stores are clean, they have good customer service, they have a good selection, and the prices aren't bad. For people that don't only shop the sales, price is the biggest advantage they will have over HT.

Competition is good...especially if it brings down prices.

I am excited about Publix, for one reason it has made HT pick their game up.

I think the winners here are the customers, I compare HT & Publix to be very similar I think there is room for both, I do think that Bi-lo may be the worried store.

It didn't take Publix much time to take market share in Atlanta. All those people switched. And those companies didn't try to expand their brand/locations when a huge competitor started invading Atlanta.

Publix exceeds HT in...
- Customer service. In example of this, the bagger walks out your groceries and loads them for you if you want; HT doesn't even think about offering this.
- Bakery. A cake at HT is by far the worst one I have ever tasted. Publix on the other hand is amazing. This doesn't even include the other bakery items that beat HT by miles.
- Deli. Boar's Head. Homemade subs at a value price full loaded with any topping you want. It puts HT is to shame.
- Stock. In my past I found I could get most of my items at Publix unlike HT where sometimes I don't find what I am looking for. My favorite brands don't phase out like they have over in HT.
- Meat quality is a step up in comparison to HT.
- No need for personal information in order to get a Sale. You don't need a "shopper reward" card to get that discount.
- No extra markup so that sales don't drop it too low while consumers still get a "deal". Soda products at HT I am talking to you. What is it $6.50 normal price for a 12 pack of Coke...
- And of course, cleaniness.

Only thing HT has over Publix is the double/triple coupons. Publix doesn't aim for the extreme couponers; they aim for the typical family.

Trust me, people not familiar with Publix will try it just on hype alone. And believe me, they will believe the hype. This statement also comes from someone who used Publix in Florida.

I'm also from Florida. When I moved to Charlotte a couple of months ago, I was told to check out Harris Teeter from people IN Florida. Harris Teeter's stores are always well maintained, while a lot of the Publix's I've shopped at weren't. Publix is also way larger than Harris Teeter as a brand, so you shouldn't expect superior service.

I agree 100 percent.

I am not saying that Publix is a bad store. It isn't. I would have no problem shopping there. I have been to the Publix "A" stores where the bakeries are really good and the "C" stores where they are absolutely nothing special. If "A" stores are built, they will be impressive. If "C" stores are built, they will not be. You may be surprised at the prices though. They have gone up everywhere and I am pretty sure that they will be on par with HT. Publix is the number 1 store in Florida as Florida is the headquarters. Again, there isn't anything wrong with Publix. They just aren't anything out of the ordinary.

No way. This is an internet forum and, therefore, everyone must be at one end of the spectrum or the other....it's in the rules.

Well for one, I doubt they will be building many "C" stores here. I've been in the Publixes in SC recently, and while I haven't done full shopping trips, I am pretty confident that their regular prices are well below HT's.

But as far as nothing out of the ordinary, this is why they have good customer service: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortu...pshots/78.html

I moved to Florida in 1987 and Publix has been my main grocery store. I tried Food Lion and Winn Dixie and hated both of them. They had dirty floors and didn't seem to care about keeping the shelves stocked. I am planning on moving to Charlotte around the time the Publix store opens and am glad it is.

They are great at doing the buy one get one free and you don't need a special card to get the deals. I have saved a ton of money shopping there. And no, I don't work for them. LOL.
