I liked Andy Griffith. The early shows were greats although by the end they were pretty bad and Andy seemed to be just going through the motions. He wasn't funny anymore, more like bothered by those around him. The show lost its chemistry when Don Knotts left and after Howard McNear had his stroke. Opie lost his cuteness and became something of a twerp.
The lone standout I can recall was the episode where Howard Sprague goes off to live on a caribbean island. Howard sort of worked, his character was just odd and uptight enough to be memorable. George Lindsey had a few moments although he was no Jim Nabors. Ken Berry was a waste. Great on F troop but pointless on Mayberry RFD. I did like Emmit, though.
If you really want to see something to see Andy Griffith's range, check out these three rare productions. One, he is a patriarch of a family of swindlers on Hawaii Five O. Then there's a movie where he's motorcycling with Robert Reeds and William Shatner and is a real heavy. Then lastly he's a junkyard owner who builds his own rocket to go to the moon. Priceless.
Andy Griffith was born in Mt Airy, North Carolina which is about 5 miles from Pilot Mountain. Mt Airy is located in the northwest corner of the Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point metro area was the model town for the fictional Mayberry, NC on the Andy Griffith Show. The town of Pilot Mountain, NC actually exists but its known as Mt Pilot on the show. Here is a photo of the mountain itself which is known for its knob at the top. While the show was set in North Carolina, it was actually filmed in California.
And one last thing. Everybody says that Mayberry is some kind of perfect small town, free of crime and strife and full of good people. if you watch the show, they had more than their share of crime. It was always big city outsiders looking to push a small town over but crime was there big time. No murders, though.
Matlock is one of my favorite shows, I have seen every episode at least 8 times.
My sons would make fun of me when they would hear the music in the beginning of the show.

There were only two or three shows that had black people in them too.
A good all-American man. If Andy was in charge you know everything would be alright. Rest In Peace, sir.
