We should have the freedom to buy the lowest price eggs if we want.
What’s next a ban on small fish tanks?
Ya gotta do what we do here & raise your own chickens!

I thought that was a FACT, but you interpret that as a emotional rant.

Well, the FACTS will drive you to mad as hell rants.

But do read my posts, in slow English. It helped millions of people across the world learn English thanks to VOA broadcasts in "slow English".
Mandated what, exactly, though? It's not clear. I already explained why it came across as imprecise. And you didn't answer my question.

Oh well.

I’ve been a slave to chicken ownership since I was in grammar school and I have always enjoyed it .
Yes it is a job and to be honest there are or at least were cheaper ways of getting eggs.
I raised chickens because I enjoyed watching them.
They have a way of calming me.
The eggs were just a bonus.
I gave most of them to my mom and brother.

Last year our coop was victim to 118 degree temps during one of California’s heat waves so I’ve been without hens since then.
I had plans on hauling the birds and that expensive coop up north to our spot.
The wife now has other plans like travel which means not replacing our critters anymore and I think she has earned it.

All that said,
If this is true I still think he over stepped once again with his pension for handing out mandates.
The free market should have sorted that out rather than one man.

Edited to add,
He just removed the competition.
Now the egg industry can now raise prices even more if they so desire.
It’s not like we have an option to buy the less expensive brand anymore.

Our neighbors next door have chickens, and their pen is cyclone fencing even on the top to keep away the many predators we have here. Sometimes they will bring us over a half dozen, and I have to say, those eggs are way better than anything from the store.

OP, here is how to make a point.

1) Facts. Link to an area Walmart how much eggs are selling for. Otherwise, we don't know if what you are saying is accurate and it also sets the TYPE of egg which is important. (also depends on if it's a whole foods in downtown Seattle vs. a Walmart in the burbs etc.)

2) More facts. Average US dozen egg price as of Nov. was around 2.15. This helps us note whether it's a local or national phenomenon like what happened a year ago due to bird flu.

P.S. Had this same discussion (different grocery items) in a FL thread a while ago. Finally drug it out of the poster that they bought it all at Whole foods and 3 blocks away at Walmart it was half as much. Well, that's on them.

I have to agree with Mathguy on this.
Forming an opinion without knowing all the facts isn’t really the best way to go.

Not that it would change my opinion on Jay but I would like to know all the numbers and ramifications on this.
Could this possibly mean keeping money in the community for pennies on the dollar?
I don’t think so but the truth is I don’t know.

Hemlock is right about the taste of fresh eggs and if I can get my neighbor to agree to check up on my hens while I’m gone (for a cut of the eggs) I might get birds again.
I just like watching them roaming around doing their thing.
The eggs taste so much better and chickens are good at bug control.

Our fresh eggs require a steamer to make them peel easier.

In fairness, I got store-bought eggs for the first time this year, in rural Washington, at a well known national chain store, yesterday. All brands of eggs were marked “cage-free” on the cartons, & all cost more than my last egg purchase at the end of 2023. End of topic for me.

One more thing: Washington is the first of several other states to implement cage-free. If you have seen how commercial laying hens are caged, you would agree that cage-free is more humane, and worth the extra $$$. The End.

Cal, of course the egg thing isn't going to break anyone on its own, but its yet another thing amongst all the new taxes, fees, and mandates that continue to come out of Olympia. With sharp increases in property taxes, the carbon tax on gas(and resulting inflation), my family is out almost $500/month more (not including that much again for medical expenses I continue to incur monitoring my bloodwork after being mandated to take poison). "The end" of things is we should have a choice, not be required to purchase $6/dozen eggs.
