Is it a good university? I have never visited Florida before, but really want to, and University of Miami is one of the colleges I am interested in. What are locals' opinions of it? Does it have a good reputation? Regarded highly? In a good neighborhood? It is in Coral Gables I believe and I have heard that is a good area of Miami.

Thank you for any help.

It depends on the major.

It is located in a good neighborhood. Most locals think it is an expensive, unaffordable university.

I would go for biology as undergrad, but I plan on going to grad school in NYC.

And I won't go there unless I receive enough financial aid.

UM is VERY expensive. It is not Ivy League. It is OK but you have to be disciplined. It IS a party school and there are lots and lots of distractions in this town.

That being said, it has become rather competitive. Now you need grades, SAT scores, in addition to money. Financial Aid may be very limited since the University has lost tons of investment money lately.

I don't know how much scholarship money and/or financial aid you can get these days that will cover UM's tuition, room & board, car & insurance, and the partying.

Coral Gables is a nicer area. UM has a good reputation over all. Though its become known as a party school. Its a small expensive university. I personally don't see the benefit of paying all that money for ivy league schools, unless your are going into a few fields. For most degrees you can get just as good of an education at a Public University, IMO.

Remember what really matters is what your Graduate College & future employers think. Most locals down here don't go to UM unless they get an scholarship or have a spouse/parent that works there (free tuition)

The only thing I can suggest is that you apply with time, so you can get the best grants/scholarships. The school is very nice, it's just way too expensive but they do have many scholarships if you have good grades. I went there almost for free.

I'd recommend it if you can work it out financially. Hell all private schools are expensive, that's not unique to UM.

They provide substantially more financial aid though.
