I was totally shocked this morning when I called Animal Control to report a neighbor who has young kittens running free outside her Condo. Her Condo door is about 6 ft from the drive way. This moring someone ran over and killed one of the kittens. The person at Animal Control told me and I am quoting "Cats are considered free roaming animals and we cannot do anything except collect the dead cat"

If this is so then why is the cat killer still in jail. If there are no laws to protect cats and Animal Control cannot do anything to protect them because they are free roaming then what good are they? I guess if one of them gets rabies and scratches or bites someone they will not be able to do anything either.

I sent an email to the head of Animal Control and I will post his response...That is if I get one.

If you are in Miami-Dade dial 311 from any land line phone and they can probably help you with this.

I called Animal Control and 311 answered. This was from them. It is hard to believe that they don't take these issues seriously. At the very least they could have had someone go and speak to the person but they were unwilling to do that.

Look I am not a cat lover but I do not like it when people get animals they do not take responsibility for and then when they abuse the privlidge of having the animals they can't be held accountable. It got so bad a few years ago that the Condo Board had to spend money rounding up cats. These were stray cats that people were feeding. The cats I am talking about are kittens and are put out side to fend for themselves next to a road way.

If owners were held accountable for their actions then we would not have had the cat killer in Palmetto bay. If Animal Control took this issue more seriously then people would not do stupid things like this. The thing they seem to be interested in most are fees. If you have a Dog you have to register it and if it dies you have to prove it died or you have to keep paying the fees. With cats you can have as many as you want and let them roam at will. No need to get them fixed and if they get hit by a car "So What".

It is the "SO What" attitude from Animal Control that I object to. I think the only reason they hunted down the Cat Killer was because it got so much attention. The reason it took them so long to catch the guy is that they took minimal steps. The cat owners were stupid and just as much to blame because they did not keep control of their cats.

I once found a healthy stray dog on 107th Ave. in Sweetwater, right across from FIU. Miami Dade doesn't have any humane shelters, all dogs are taken to Hialeah presumably to be killed (or eaten). Miami's 3rd world mentality comes down on the wrong side of animal compassion.

I ended up taking the poor, shivering dog (which had been roaming the area around the Shell gas station for days) up to Broward to Wayne Huizenga's wife's palacial animal clinic.

It's just so amazing that people don't care. Hopefully she will feel the ire of the neighbors. May be she will see the poor kitten dead in her dreams for a few weeks. Anything is possible but I doubt it because anyone who would do this has no feeliing toward animals other than they are just something for their amusement for what ever time they are willing to spend with them.

Ask for Kathy Labrada of the Animal Service Unit, she cares and she will fine violators for negligence and cruelty to animals.

I found 7 of them,one is at 16101 West Dixie Highway,North Miami Beach,Florida.

If you watch Miami Animal Police, you will find they are very compassionate about their job especially when it comes to negligence and cruelty to animals

I delt with her a few years ago when a neighbor had a dog (still does) that she let roam free off the leash. Twice the dog attacked me and I escaped without getting bit narrowly. The owner refused to call the dog off. Both Animal control and the Police got involved and refused to do anything but threaten to fine her. This was because they didn't see the incident. Since then the lady keeps her dog out of sight when I am around because I have a Video Camera and will use it.

I just sent her an email about this situation.
