I want to know whether I should go to the University of Miami? I have met all the academic requirements and I have plenty of references, both professional and academic. Is U of M a good school and will it prepare me for a good career and other positive opportunities or am I better off going somewhere else? What are the professors, faculty, and students like? How is the surrounding area? Is it worth taking out tens of thousands of dollars in loans, just to live my dream of living in South Florida?

How much money are we talking about in loans? Having to take out the full amount for a private undergraduate education isn't worth the price no matter what school it is imho.

One of my sons graduated from UM ('08). He loved the school, Coral Gables, Miami, etc. But, flyers29 is correct. You can get a fine education for far less than the 50k per year that UM will cost. With the job market so tough, that degree can take the better part of your working life to pay off.

I agree with both of your responses that is why I am reluctant to put myself in so much debt.

I would be reluctant as well, especially as an English major. If you absolutely positively have to live in South Florida, consider FIU. It's actually a pretty good school. If you're less attached to South Florida than you thought, seek out a college with a top-notch English department that'll pay you dividends upon successful graduation. My suggestions: UNC-Chapel Hill, U of Wisconsin, U of Iowa, Indiana U, U of Virginia and U of Illinois. All are Top 25 Undergraduate English programs and since they're public schools, even if paying one or two years of out-of-state tuition, you won't be bankrupted.

If you are going to be an English major I don't think UM will be worth the money. If you would of said law or med school was your career path them UM would be worth the money. But as an English major you can go to many other lower costs schools and get a great education. In the end, where you went to school, in many fields doesn't matter, it's your work and experience that plays a bigger roll.

I would look at Gainsville, University of Florida, or if you want to live in South Flroida, look at FAU. Not FIU, that is a commuter school. I had friends who went to UF and loved it. Save your student loan money for a Masters degree, go cheap on undergad. University of Alabama is a nice school too,

I'm an UM alumni, but I wouldn't go to UM to be an English major, unless I had a full scholarship, or very close to it. UM has some good programs, but for English it's not worth paying the tuition.
