However 1970-1 was a moderate Niña, 1973-4, 1988-9 and 2010-11 were strong, and 1983-4 and 1995-6 weak to at times moderate.I was in Florida in early 1989. Wow it was warm, about 85° in Boca. The wedding we were attending was unbearably hot.
Yeah we had a weak one in the winter of 2017-18 and one indication of the weakness of it was that we had this serious polar vortex here in the Southeast, where it got down the single digits and below zero in some places in NC.

The whole winter was warm and not very windy as i was fishing offshore. Then BOOM DEC of 1989 was very cold and had our last super freeze at X mas of 89.

1983 we got down to 19f in Tampa on X mas and a high of 38f. Jan 1984 was also very cold with lows in the 20's as fishing offshore was rough and tough with a active winter and rough seas. If i remember right X mas 1984 was super hot.

Who knew? I never thought anywhere outside the Gulf or The East coast could ever be affected by the subtropical jet stream.

Did back then also big time. Year after year, 1980-81-82-83-84-85-86 and 89. Never even been close to them super freezes since.
