lol, kinda crazy to see the shift south and a tell tale sign of how strong the cold air is that its pushing south more this time of yr. Kinda figured forecasts changed, all they do is watch the models.

But Don't let guard down though, it can shift slightly back north.

By the way.....

My 1st Mows of the season (yes I keep track of everything, lol!)

Kinda not a fair balance though because I been fertilizing much more past few yrs so its been growing fast and early. So doesn't represent the weather pattern much. But typically mid-end of April is the 1st.

Nice. I apparently have a history of complaining on Facebook about having to mow for the first time. So the "on this day" feature has reminded me of my first mowing. The last few years we've had warm enough winters to have mowed at least once if not twice by now. I've never been able to wait until mid to late April here. Usually it seem right around the first week or April. But we've been running typically 20-30 degrees below normal which hits 60 degrees today. Yesterday our high was 35.

Last post for now, gotta run..

From NWS Philly

Quote:
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
640 AM EDT Thu Apr 5 2018

The upper-level pattern is quite complex in eastern North America,
and this poses a difficult forecast for tonight. Two vorticity
maxima will be rotating cyclonically around a larger-scale vortex
centered near Hudson Bay. One of these vorticity maxima will be
sliding east-southeast through the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes
region while the second will be moving southward through
western/central Ontario..

This mornings Upper Heights: Gotta get that Vortex out of there for any sustained Spring weather in the East..

With 850mb temps.

Next 14 days. Just keeps spinning and spinning pushing the Jet stream down carving a cold trough in the East. Finally changes around or after mid month with it staying more north not allowing a south push into the U.S. But looks like it may reform says GFS so the troughs may continue.

And looks like they wont be adding much to that count next 7 days, with snow included
We've only had 3 days at or above 54F since March 1st.

Least amount since 2001 at ORD.

MDW missing data but shows since 1965.

Either way, yeah, been a while for many of us experiencing 1st half of Spring like this.

The averages aren't crazy though. I would of suspected that the lows have been high because of all the clouds and precip events around but both max and min aren't reflecting what its been like.

Maybe we're used to how it's been in recent years?
Maybe we just haven't had enough days above certain criteria?

Anyway -- A look at the temp departures last 30 days. I circled the area colder than 3 below normal.

One thing I never realised til this first spring here is that snow melts in the 20s in sunlight. This doesn't happen much in winter even in 36 degrees.

First March without getting above 60F in Indianapolis since 1970, according to the National Weather Service.

Just looked at the forecast since I was spurred on by reading the comments here and saw that it would be above 32F for at least 4 of the 7 days anyhow, lol.

Had some nice snowfalls here last night and still snowing today...looks like we just might break that 200" threshold this year I guess.

The red maples have bravely started to bud despite all of this and the crocuses got tired of waiting and have pushed up through the snow.
