Amherst had a high of 79°F, low of 38°F. 26°F above normal. Today might be more above normal, since the morning temperature was so much warmer. March 2012 was 9.5°F above normal, will we have a chance of beating that?
Look at the 4" depth column. Looks like the SC station (On March 4th) was 54°. The AG map for this morning shows 50s. So it matches.
The March 7th map does look colder. It's not specific to individual stations and backyards plus NRCS only has 4 stations reporting in Virginia. Are they farms with a black plastic over the soil in direct sun?
They are Dept of Ag sites and there is a photo with site notes. No they are not fields covered with black tarp lol. Looks like grass covered soil to me. How accurate would that be?
Also, I looked up that Pee Dee South Carolina site for Jan 2014. A very cold winter with an anomaly of -4.5F. The avg soil temp for the month of Jan 2014 was 45F at -4 inches. All the data is on that site.
Today might be warmer than yesterday if temperatures over-perform again. .

I checked March 2015 for this site below and the soil just about went to freezing (33F). PeeDee, SC doesn't have any reports for Feb or March 2015.
Check it out.. As I said, soil temps fluctuate given the current conditions and/or snowpack.
This VA site went from 42° on 2/28 to 47° 3 days later back to 42° 3 days later now up to 54° 5 days later.
Guess what.. Islip is warmer than yesterday. LOL. Nice call. I bet you winds made a difference which I failed to factor in? Whoops. I was wrong... For Long Island but not for the rest of region though.
We got lucky lol. I maxed out at 78F, but that was about an hour ago, it's "only" 70F now with significant cloud cover. 20 minutes before I left work I watched in horror as the sky began clouding up, so I didn't even get a chance to experience the warmth, just my luck.
Check out Hartford's swings this year I condensed. Minimum temp 10 above to 13 below to 21 above to normal to 16 above to 33 below to 12 above, ect ect. Warmer days above normal dominating more since mid February. The above normal days are much higher than the below normal since.
Feb 14th didn't pass 10°F and yesterday hit 81°F.

Your map showed 30'F soil temps widespread in the East on March 7th. Another site in coastal NC your map also showed in the 30's or barely 40F. The coldest soil temp in March of this year was 8.9C (48F) on March 5th. Your map shows that locale barely 40F for soil temp.
2015 was one of the coldest winters in years in the East. I wonder what your map showed for 2015. We would have to compare like to like to see if your map was more accurate then. The Pee Dee site is available for 2014. The lowest soil temp in March 2014 (cold winter) was 6.6C, and in March 2010 (cold winter) it was 6.5C (44F). But imo it is way off in early March of this year. The actual soil temps in Pee Dee went no lower than the 50's this month. I don't think the soil temp in that part of South Carolina is rarely if ever in the 30'sF in March.

But why do you keep ignoring the update which matches? Maybe AG overestimated how cold it was March 7th? I did show how the lows did got to freezing so why didn't the soil temp drop at those sites?
I also like to know more about NRCS and how they measure. Is there a tool or does someone physically check? At what time?
Had a drizzle before. Felt like a Summer sprinkle. 75°F here. Crazy. And cloudy to boot. Wow! Not even the clouds are saving me today.
