Here's a look at the temps aloft.. You can see the backwards tilt of the trough. Almost to say screw the East, I aint touching that monster Ridge. So the Jet stream is buckling towards the West and whats happening is Polar air from the Vortex over the Arctic is bleeding down.
Freezing level at 4000 feet is past the US border now. Hence why its so cold at the surface. Plus add that High pressure and Radiational cooling at night too.
Fun to see the Yellows and Green for the West coast, Pacific doing its thing even with a trough.
"The first snowfall warning was issued just late last week in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut with the risk of up to 20 cm of snow on Thursday. Now, another advisory warns of a "long period of snowfall with total amounts of 15-25 cm expected in the Yukon.
"Snow and strong easterly winds up to 60 km/h gusting to 80 km/h will combine to produce blowing snow and reduced visibilities over the northern sections of the Dempster Highway today," said Environment Canada in an updated snowfall warning early Tuesday morning. "In addition to what has already fallen, another 10 cm of snow is expected by this evening."
Although the stationary arctic front will remain over the region through Wednesday, both the snow and wind is expected to ease below warning criteria.
Drivers are being warned to adjust travel plans with the risk of sudden changing road conditions.
"Visibility may be reduced at times in heavy snow," EC warns.
"It makes me very excited," said Kendra Scurfield, spokesperson at Sunshine Village in Banff, Alberta. "This most recent snowfall is the biggest snowfall we've seen to date and the snow is all the way down to the upper village, where the gondola is. Hopefully it starts sticking around soon."
While there's still an entire fall season to get through first, officials say it's never too early to start refreshing yourself on winter safety tips. Especially when it comes to driving.
