This winter so far?

To Date.... Warmest winter on record NYC, Bridgeport, Boston, Albany, Vermont, Concord, Caribou. At current Philly location it's the warmest. When using all sites for Philly its 2nd warmest.

December of course had much to do with this.

Good question. I suppose this pattern may produce a bunch of clipper type systems for me at least.

On the SSW topic... Steve D Discussion this morning.. We should save this and come back to it to see how he did. Don't mistake his excitement for hype I guess since he has valid backup to use those words. lol

Quote:

"Enjoy the pattern relaxation while you can over the next 7 days. Clean off the snow and make sure your snow blower is completely operational. Prepare yourself for a delayed spring and watch the NL Champion NY Mets Spring Training games with snow falling in New York City, because the major Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event process has started and this one looks to be one of the most impressive I have seen in some time, possibly rivaling the one in 2009/10.

The process to the SSW event has officially kicked started yesterday with the Arctic Oscillation in the stratosphere flipping to a negative phase while the Arctic Oscillation in the troposphere goes positive. This is a result of a massive energy transfer from the troposphere to the stratosphere which basically transfer a lot of heat from the tropical troposphere into the tropical and then Polar stratosphere. This process then cascades down through the stratosphere and into the troposphere leading to a strong and prolonged negative Arctic Oscillation in the troposphere.

This process though may deliver in a bigger impact than normal because significant warming finally develops over the northern Pacific AND eastern North America. This signal strongly supports a powerful ridge over western North America, which is already showing up in the model guidance 6 days out and locks in about 7 days out. This ridge configuration will open up the cross Polar flow from Siberia right into eastern North America by February 5th and help support a massive Arctic out break after February 6th.

This process will also lead to a building of heights over the Arctic circle which will extend to Greenland as well. This process APPEARS to support a powerful negative EPO, negative AO, and negative NAO pattern locking in and staying place from February 10th on through March 15th with support from a steadily weakening El Nino event sending plenty of tropical moisture into a strong Polar jet stream block "

So rest up the next few days, you are going to need it.
