Andrea, I'm with you and I love how eloquently you put it. What's your average temp for today? Mine is 64 and I don't think we hit 50. But that's still warmer then our past few days have been.
I read about your weather...
We were 65 F and sunny then; with our strange light winds and strong sun it felt close to 80 F.

Our average in Toronto is probably 59 F, but today we were only 49 F, and in the morning.
Most of the afternoon was mid 40's F. Now it's 39 F, going to a low somewhere just above freezing.

I know your averages are warmer than here spring to fall in Mitchell SD.
At first I was a little jealous, but it seems that at least in spring and fall it's better that we have a more stable climate, even if gloomy. Frost is as unusual as 75-80+ F, so usually plants can slowly move into spring, or at least slow enough to avoid frost damage.

CC,
It is very chilly here in E Kansas at 39N latitiude. The current temperature is 38F with calm winds. A threat of frost is likely by morning with low temps below freezing. The temperature is now 64F inside my house and I am not turning on the heat

Oh, you're kidding? Way up and over where you live? It was kind of a freak storm though. Today three cities hit record lows~Aberdeen, Pierre, and Watertown.

In order for corn to germinate, you need a soil temp of 52 at the 4 inch level ( for sweet corn it should be higher)

We are a long way from that and May 1st is near.
