I haven't said much about the Feb 4-5th storm in Northeast because I'm waiting for more continuity. The storm is still there. That's a given. Details like precip type and timing are naturally back and forth. Euro being consistant with a big snowfall. Canadian as well. GFS not as impressed and says Rain more.
Either we need Winter Weather Flights going out into the Pacific to get better data into the models or we have to wait until the weekend to know better.
I was thinking the same exact thing yesterday. This is too much, I just want it to end.
On the same page, through yesterday, DC's average of 32.8F was on par with a PHL/NY January, and having multiple (two) single digit lows in a winter season has only occurred twice after 1993/94 (the other being 1995/96). Where I am currently, Pittsburgh through today has six <= 0F lows, the most since the seven in 1993/94. With a few brief respites added in, I'm not complaining; it's much better than the wimpy previous two winters.
Technically Every state has snow cover on it except Missouri and Arizona I think.
Wow, that would be extremely usual. Not just the number of states with snow, but those without it. None in Arizona, even the mountains?
This map shows some snowy spots in Arizona, presumably high elevation areas. Intellicast - Snow Cover in United States Arkansas and Missouri appear to be the only ones without any snow.

You must be young, winters in NYC have been much more severe than this prior to 20 years ago. Granted the harshest winter in NYC would be a moderately cold winter here, but judging by the averages so far, it's nowhere near the coldest. NYC Central Park currently has a winter Mean temp of 33.9F. 1981-2010 Mean for Dec/Jan is 35.5F. That's barely a degree and a half below average?!?
If we just took, January to date, NYC Central Park has a mean of 29.3F, while 33.0F is the average, so yes, this month has been colder than normal.
Winter isn't going anywhere. NCEP Ensembles show February as cold as it can get in NW US & Canada 5-10 days:
Remember that sentence. Part of the reason for my thoughts coming up.
As far as the storm next week. Euro transfers the Tenneessee Valley Low off NJ coast. Hence the big snowfall it results in. Storm still there. That's all that matters. Fun to look at the snow results but almost pointless right now. Always good to prepare I guess in the same sentence.
Hope you can see this graphic. Please let me know if you can't.
Euro surface and precip HRs 168 & 174.
