Quick look at the current surface temps left and Sea Surface Temps right.

Water temps have only so much to say. It's All about the mid and upper level flow of air sometimes.

Whats interesting is the purples bleeding down the East coast. Now low 40s and colder from central Virginia northward along the coast

It's snowed in the south, it was warm in Alaska, the vortex always breaks off. All things that have happened in the past; in our lifetime; and for sure before weather records were even started.

January 1994. Warm Alaska, cold East.

Something is brewing for Feb 4th or Feb 5th... Too soon to tell, but it might be big news for the Central US (then out east).

From my main man Tom Skilling

Quote:
Cold's not going away-but it's easing its grip in the days ahead-ALBEIT VERY S L O W L Y. Lows tonight: 2 to 12-below; wind chills 12-24 below. Tonight's sub-0 low temp will be the 19th 0-deg or lower temp of the 2013-14 season.
Factoring in today's -11 low (2nd coldest low temp this winter) and the 3-deg high Tuesday, January 2014 is the coldest of past 29 yrs! It's 11th coldest January of the past 143 yrs in the 10th coldest winter since 1871

From my office NWS Grand Forks North Dakota... Grand Forks has had 21 days since Dec 1st....when the high temperature has been below zero (F). This is second all time to date in the number dating to the late 1880s. So indeed this cold has been very persistent.

Just checked this northwest suburban station. Looks to be the coldest in the metro area. Jan 2nd data is missing

Marengo is in the far Northwest suburbs

It's started snowing here. Already accumulating. We're expecting around 1 inch. Down the shore at points such as Wildwood, they're expecting 3 to 5.

Huge blown low temperature forecast for Madison today. The low was supposed to be -20F and the actual low was -14F. Not much wind at all either. Could be an urban heat island effect at the airport or other factors?
